The three main buildings where I worked were connected by two second floor walkways across the in-between roads.

Every few years we had a truck driver who didn't pay attention to the signs and would drive a too high truck under a too low bridge.

One day we had engineers running around with yardsticks and a ladder (think about 11 ft 8 inch on a ladder with yardstick)...

It seems he wanted to bring in big tanker trucks filled with hydrogen. He wanted to bring in two a day of the huge tankers.

The walkway was too low.

We recommended he dig out the road and put a dip in it. We like our walkways in winter.

HE was ready to rip the walkway down when he discovered that the tankers were so big they couldn't make the right hand turn into the access road. It was like a hairpin turn of almost 180 degrees uphill and narrow ... the Tankers wouldn't bend.

We giggled when we heard. We all hated the know-it-all PhDs with degrees in stupid.

I know that bridge having lived near it for 12 years. It's in Durham, NC. There were a lot of rail bridges like this in older sections of major cities in North Carolina and we had one in the city I lived in with similar warnings (on the same rail line but 60 miles west of this), but the traffic was often backed up behind it at a traffic signal immediately on the other side of the underpass.

The photo shows these drivers have no excuse, they have signs, flashing lights telling them their vehicle is too tall, etc.

There are a series of railroad bridges parallel to Western Ave. on Chicago's North Side. About once a month some trucker would do just what is in the clip. I find it hard to believe that a trucker who prides himself on puting an eight foot truck into a seven foot loading dock doesn't know how high he is. The truck rental agencies in the neighborhood all have signs up warning people about the low bridges.

Someone should put a laser beam at 11.5 feet high many feet in front of the bridge that would turn lights on the bridge red and light up a message saying, "STOP! Your vehicle is too high."

Several years ago, I started seeing signs with the bridge height in front of all bridges that are less than 16 feet tall. I wonder why they did that since the maximum legal height of all vehicles in the US is 13.5 feet without a special permit.

The height you refer to is only applicable to the Interstate Highway System. Having driven many large trucks, I always know the height of my truck - I get out and measure it. Most drivers never bother. Height signs are required on bridges, not only because some are low, but as a warning to carriers of tall / oversize loads. They are not requirred on bridges over 16 feet high, or taller.

If you put a light bar on top of some of vans they are too high for multi-level parking lots in the city. I've seen that happen. Some fellow with grand designs in a volunteer fire company put a light bar on his van and first time he drove it into his favorite parking garage ripped the light bar off.

The other thing is those jack-up big wheel trucks with all the chrome and then the six or eight hunting lights on top of the roof. Another time I saw one of them backing out of the parking garage and an attendant I knew raising all holy hell at the guy for even thinking about driving inside.

I had an acquaintance who severely damaged their garage by trying to drive something into the garage or out of the garage that hit the roller door. There is a specific age of old houses that have low roofs. Some of the bigger trunks lave lids that just catch onto the handle of the roller door...

And I agree with Krister... There are people who drive trucks that never measure the height and never know if they will just miss by that one, oh so tiny inch and lose the roof in a peel back.
