Anal Glands

Post by Paolo »

No, not yours! Humans don't have these, thank God!

My beagle woke up at 3am Saturday morning and had to go out. This is not unusual for me or him, so we both go.

The problem the next morning was that his tail was tucked, and he was whiney and needy all day long. Same thing all night. By Monday morning, I was exhausted from lack of sleep. So was he. He didn't want to eat, or try to poop either. Just a little of both, which was better than nothing.

Turns out his anal glands were impacted and full.

The vet drained them. It was sort of like having a prostate exam! Snoopy was not impressed. Neither was anyone in the vet's office when the little suckers blew! Talk about stink.

My Corky gets his anal glands expressed once a month during his spa day. A nice shampoo, condition, blow dry and a rectal squeeze. We do have so much fun together.

Is this common with hounds or all breads because I have never had that happen with any of the dogs I have had.

Basically, all dogs have these glands.

IF the bowel movements are too loose, the glands fill up. You need to switch your dog to a hard and dry dog food. Buy a good one, too. DO not over use treats and very seldom feed table scraps, if at all.

Dogs will drag their asses across the yard, grass, rug, etc. They are trying to do-it-theirselves.

...ON MY CARPET?

😱

BTW, gross, ain't it? 😄

...P.S. ...you have them. too, but when you wipe your ass you express them...

A-1, does your employer have any specials on anal gland expression?

Or do you get yours expressed once a week on payday like I do?!

LOL

:)

Seriously, the vet said the following are factors for dogs to be prone to this:

Hounds

Beagles and smaller hound mix as well, more prone

Overweight

4 years old or more

Chronic soft stools

The good thing is, it's easily fixed and relief is instant!

My groomer did not warn me the first time she did it. She is very kind and it is fun to hang out while Corky is shampooed. She did her thing and it shot back and hit the back wall of the big sink/tub. I jumped and said "I think you could warn a fella". Now it does not bother me but the first time was a surprise. The previous groomer never let the owners hang out so I do not know if he ever did it.

Thanks A-1 and Paolo,

I feed my dog dry food, wet is a treat, she does eat lots of milk bones however I make them so again this does not seem to be a problem plus the breed of dog.

Milk bones for your hound,

3/4 cup hot water

1 stick of margarine

1/2 cup powered milk

1 tea spoon salt

1 egg

2 tea spoons sugar

3 cups of whole wheat flour

mix the water, margarine, then add the milk salt and sugar, mix then add the flour roll out on board or table top, cut into bite sized treats, put on a pan and in the oven at 325 fro 50 minutes, turn off oven open door let some of the heat out then let them stay in the oven for another 20 minutes.

They last about 2 weeks.

Nelly loves cooking day she gets them warm out of the oven.

Prep time 15 minutes,

We had them removed on our dog since the poor guy kept getting infections there. He didn't like it when it happened but seems otherwise content now.
