Re: Death of Fiction?
cant we have like a sorta blog review underneath each individualized story? Of course completely private from the outside world. or will this idea tax the servers?
and maybe have it self delete itself when the comments grow out of proportions
sort like how youtube sets up its comments under each individualized video. except it keeps the comments archived for yrs.
Theres no purpose in keeping a comment for over a yr

You know, I was working on a long reply to this one, but I think I'll just skip it.
It just isn't worth it.
Be glad it's not my call on the fate of the fiction archive, what with all the work that went into getting it back to what it is currently, and the fact that it still seems to be nothing but bitch bitch bitch about it.
Also be glad that you've got Cainanite as the new story "pro". Very glad.

Re: Death of Fiction?
What about poor lil' ol' me who really doesn't have any complaints whatsoever, and is grateful for every single ounce of feedback I receive? Hell, in the real world you're lucky if you get "revise and resubmit" as a comment when you send something in to be printed.
Here's my take on it... there are a lot of people out there, like me, who have spent probably our whole adult lives writing stories about castration, penectomy, transsexualism, and the like. Most of the time, those stories are permanently locked up on our hard drives because although we have put a lot of effort into them, there is nowhere in the "real world" that we would feel comfortable sharing these stories. The EA is a place that, finally, all of that pent-up creativity and those secret desires can at last be shared freely with the world in a 100% safe place. And not only do people not judge you for it, they actually understand what you're writing about, and it's such an amazing feeling to think that there are others out there who actually enjoy your writing about YOUR little fantasy world, and they actually understand the feelings. It's the only place I can think of where all of these stories can find a home. It's therapy on many levels. And I know there are others out there who feel the same way.
I would be crushed if the fiction archive were to go away. There's nowhere else that I feel comfortable sharing these stories.
I'll take the fiction archive in any form I can get, even if it's stripped-down to its bare minimum and I never get a single other rating. I don't care what I have to do. I'll personally write a review of EVERY single new story that's submitted if that's what it will take to save it.

fhunter wrote: Thu Dec 27, 2012 2:28 pm In no ways I want to complain, but, I almost stopped reading the archive.
In the good old days it "just worked". Now... it requires password, which I do not keep in memory (this is my own machine and account, I never logout from web services), and, to make matters worse, it occasionally forgets that I was logged in, even with the proper option.
To make matters even more worse, even if it remembers, that I am logged in, if I was absent for some time, it, instead of opening the link, redirects me to the index.
And this breaks the scenario, with dropping the link from PC to tablet, to comfortably read it, or converting it for e-reader.
I do not want to belittle the great work of those, who made a new story archive. And I do understand the need to protect the site.
PS. If this is inappropriate, please delete.
PPS. Sometimes I just do not know, how/what to write, and if a review is written, and I mostly agree with it... I just do not see the point of writing my own.
What fhunter said, well "my sentiments exactly" or "I couldn't have said it better myself."
Believe me, I really do appreciate the fiction archive, some of the writing there is amazing... like "The Christmas That Never Was," DAMN THAT WAS FUCKING GREAT! or "Virtual Reality," I really liked that, and I remember reading "Treating Satyrism in Tsarist Russia," oh so so so many great stories, hours of enjoyment and learning. But then... my reading paradise was lost, for some (I suppose very good) reason, the archive had to be put is some sort of lock up, hard to get to, hard to remember passwords, just not like it once was.
I know how everyone gets so angry because of any criticism here, so I generally just keep my mouth shut about it, but I miss the old simple archive, that was easy for me to get to.
Re: Death of Fiction?
Actually, Foxy, I like the idea of Youtube-like comments, but I'm sure that'd be a bear to install.

^I'd really like to see something like that too. That would open up the floodgates in terms of comments, because then people could just leave quick little thoughts instead of having to go over to the forums and start a new topic and write a whole review. That would mean LOTS of stories getting feedback that they usually wouldn't get.

Re: Death of Fiction?
I think having a cap limit of comments per year would be good. Then say every Xmas or once a yr just delete them and start from fresh . Of course delete if and only if it exceeds the limit.
Chances are anyways that a story won't overexceed the limit anyways bc people will be moving on to comment other stories.
I think it's possible and although the EA is a large community, perhaps another young programmer could perchance come long the scene and pitch in.
This is all hypothetical thinking but where theres a will theres a way

Re: Death of Fiction?
Somehow I see this as a compliment... Heh! Not that good for the fiction archive itself perhaps, but what I mean is that, when it started up a long time ago, it started as a kind of writing project where the collection was meant to grow. Now that it has grown huge and has lots of stories and many ideas have been used, I think lots of people just love reading whatever they can find, because there is already so much out there, and I know from personal experience that trying to write something hot that hasn't already been written, is kind of difficult. I have some ideas, but then I check out some past stories just to check if I copy something, I start reading that story all over again, and it gets me horny, I blast off, and then it takes a little while before my balls gets back on track.
It's also somewhat taboo, all this stuff, and I guess that's why there isn't much open talk about it either.
Personally I think eunuchworld.org deserves a whole bunch of formal awards! At least I know I love it. And I will try to write as well.
