Re: The Higgs Boson pokes back (oh drat, it's not what you expected)
After sleeping on it, what if a group of physicists who built this big circle thing to see what was smaller, took matter into their own hands and crashed the two pieces of it together causing the Big Bang?
I get to play the part of GOD

Also Dave. I'm curious, suppose supersymetry does come into play. How will this effect how we perceive a universe ?
An infinite series within another infinite series in terms of dimensional analysis?
1D, 2D, 3D,4D,5D, etc....
My best guess is we live in a 3rd dimensional reality with a infinite 2D choices however most of those infinite 2D choices will collapse. Our end resulting 2D choice will be our choice of best fit.
I cannot imagine the raw choices a 4rth dimensional being can have on 3rd dimensional objects

I don't know supersymmetry that well to even answer right now.
Maybe after Christmas I'll figure it out.
The Higgs Bosons will still be around...

The Problem:
Scientist decide, there must be a Higgs Boson then go about proving it.
I trust, honest science. Like Fleming and Penicillin. An unexpected find during his research to treat "infections".
A bacterial culture plate was about to be discarded when he noticed, a growth killing the bacteria!
200 years ago they had ether, until they didn't need it anymore.
The God Particle is a lie, being invested with lots of $ $ $ to proved "it is".
These scientist can't let them down. Si?
Was it FIRST the word or the thought of that demiurge that created mass, material, substance and energies
out of "?" and entrap spirits?
Moi
Enlightenment never ends.
Don't trust Science.

Moi.....I expected better than this from you(oh well ^ ^). It does exist, statistics is no fallacy.
heads = favour of higgs
tails = not in favour
outcome = heads > tails (1 billion : 1)
NB = this isn't even debatable, what Dave said afterwards was simply existence of multiple higgs particles. an extension to whats already proven)
Btw it's the "goddamn particle" not the "god particle"; The science community hates when higgs is reffered to as something coming from a divine source. It was called the goddamn particle bc it was so hard to find(not even the tevatron could find it) but some imbecile shortened it to the god particle.
And that somehow stuck with the general public

This is why The god particle doesn't sit well with the science oriented folk

Re: The Higgs Boson pokes back (oh drat, it's not what you expected)
Higgs proposed the field that expressed itself as gravity back in the 1950's if I recall correctly. Gravity is one of the four forces that hold what we call reality (our universe) together and give it shape and form.
The name "God Particle" was the invention of some reporter or editor who needed to goose an otherwise dull science story.
The problem with finding the particle that is the expression of the field is that it requires very high energies. Hence the building of the LHC in Europe.
And Like FOXY's link shows, science is always a process of thinking, finding and adjusting.
More than "one" Higgs Boson indicates that the current models have to be rethought and revised. Science is always that way at the edges.

Thanks for explaining Higgs Boson in terms I can almost understand. Physics seems to be a discipline where the more you study it the more you realize you don't know.

How true. In 1900 they thought they knew everything there was to know about physics and the world; then along came Max Planck and the quantum and Albert Einstein and the theory of relativity. Both turned everything upside down. Now, the more we know, the less we seem to know. We don't even know what dark matter and dark energy are, and they make up most of the universe.
