Chinese 'Survival Pods' To Help Their Maker, Liu Qiyuan, Ride Out Mayan Apocalypse (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post | By Ryan Grenoble

Liu Qiyuan, a farmer in Qiantun, China, was worried enough about the possibility of the coming Mayan apocalypse that he decided to take matters into his own hands. Unlike some of his countrymen, though, Liu shunned the run-of-the-mill Noah's Ark copycats in favor of 21st century innovation.

The result? A set of seven "emergency pods" constructed to survive a potential apocalypse. (Despite their innovations, Liu has nicknamed them "Noah's Ark," according to the Daily Mail).

Each pod is a self-contained sphere built of waterproof fiberglass and steel. When submerged in water, they automatically float upright -- and in the event the 14 possible occupants get jostled around too much, there are seat belts. Passengers also have access to a store of food, oxygen and water supplies.

"The pod won’t have any problems even if there are 3,000-foot high waves -- it's like a ping pong ball, it's skin may be thin but it can withstand a lot of pressure,” Liu told AFP.

He added, "I worked for many years without saving much money ... invested most of my money in the pods, because it’s worth it, it’s about saving lives." Each pod cost an estimated $48,000, reports RT, leaving Liu in quite a bit of debt. Then again, if it's the end of the world, that'll be the last of his worries.

According to a survey conducted by Ipsos-Reuters, 20 percent of the Chinese population believes the Mayan calendar accurately predicts the end of the world in December 2012. That's the highest percentage for any country in the world, followed by Turkey at 13 percent.

Rupert a cat seen to the left

Nelly a dog not shown.

River, master to one, slave to the other shown holding the master to the left.

That's absolutely shocking! No wonder the world is damned. I'd contact your local morality warriors immediately or you'll be seeing a hurricaine well before next Friday! :)

A cat I had as a child was absolutely besotted with the dog next door. When we moved house she was traumatised, she never really recovered. I love it when they get along and Rupert looks like he likes a cuddle! :)

Well, with one week to go, now is as good a time as any before the event.

Parodied from Colbert's annual Yom Kippur routine.

If anyone cares to apologize to Moi for any insults, or other abuse -

Do it now before it is too late.

Not applicable for those who do not believe in a continuity of spirit, soul, life force, etc..

Those who hold such beliefs, but can't remember any dyscivility might just chalk one up just in case.

Forgiveness not guaranteed.

Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, hair loss, dysphoria, paranoia, etc. etc.

A meteor just did a flyby past the earth...

Astronomers said it was a Twinkie the size of Manhattan Island...

I think I saw that go over last night?

I saw something that wasn't a typical burning out meteor, no flashing airplane lights, too large for a satelite, and looked like Jupiter - only Jupiter was 'over there', and I have no clue what it was.

I was hoping it was a small moon of Nibiru, as I'm still hoping for a rogue planet scenario with massive gravitational upheaval.

The sky show in the winter is magnificent but cold since the clearest nights are cloudless and in the middle of winter when heat radiates from the earth.

However, if you do venture out with a telescope. go out the night of a new moon. Look north and find Polaris. From there you should be able to locate the big and little dippers, the "W" shaped constellation of Cassiopeia and the Andromeda Galaxy... and the Pleides in their glorious smudginess. With good eyes, you can count the seven sisters (stars)..

But the real show is looking south.

Orion is easy to pick-- look for the three stars that form the belt. they stand out. Below them is the great Orion Nebula that is so photogenic, the Hubble Telescope owes it royalties. Betelgeuse is a shoulder of Orion. To your left out to be Castor and Pollux (the Gemini) near each other and below them Sirius the brightest star in the heavens, really bright... To the right of Orion will be Aldebaran the red eye of Taurus the Bull. It is red.

I used to drive home in the dark during winter and on clear nights, I could go into my front yard and see all of these over the roof of my house.

There is a valley near me in the middle of a county park that has no lights. When I go there, I can see the Milky Way in the sky. That's rare up north and east because there is so much light being cast into the sky.

but you still freeze.
