Shower scene in Psycho is the classic one. I also like the little girl zombie killing her mother in Night of the Living Dead.

Not gruesome, but I love Cagney at the end of White Heat! "Top of the World, Ma!"

I'll have to vote for Mufasa's death from "The Lion King." That one was even worse than Bambi's mom, because they not only actually showed it on-screen, they had an entire scene where Simba is trying to 'wake him up,' and there isn't an immediate scene of pretty little birdies chirping around to immediately break the mood afterward, where the main character is now grown up and completely fine. No, in The Lion King, Simba really has to face up to what has happened, and you really get the sense that it haunted him throughout his entire life, and it was a REALLY bold move by Disney to do something this emotionally blunt in one of their animated films. Say what you will about the rest of the movie, especially the comic relief, but the core emotional center of it, revolving around Mufasa's death and how Simba must come to terms with it, is just absolutely amazing stuff. I'll never forget seeing it in theaters at age 8 as long as I live. It was just freaking AWESOME!

I don't know about the best, but the one I really liked was in the old James Bond Movie On her Majesty's Secret Service when the skier chasing Bond doesn't quite make the jump and ends up going through the snow blower.

Seeing that at 8 would have been an experience, yes.

Honestly, I cannot remember any movie from childhood that left that kind of mark of me, except for very vague recollections of a Disney episode from Sunday night where a young Indian boy was thrown off a cliff, and the gods transformed him into an eagle on the way down. Never saw it since, never knew the name of it.

Wow, Ive never heard anyone who's hasn't seen bambi. I always cried and even to this day will let out a small tear and pretend I have garbage in my eye just to not show my emotions towards my friends. watching bambi helplessly so lost without his mom. This scene touches me too cause I wish I could somehow reconnect with my own mom who prefers to love me her own way or beat the highway.

The Princess Bride is one of those movies where the only people who don't like it, have probably never seen it. It is just cheesy enough to be laughable, without being so cheesy that you roll your eyes, and have no sense of disbelief. Unlike most modern movies, it isn't filled with current cultural references, and pop terminology. It just is what it is, and is unapologetic about it.

Even in its day, it wouldn't have won any awards. The special effects were non-existent. The acting was good, but never great. The cinematography wasn't cutting edge, and the story wasn't overly complex. It was just a darn good time at the movies. I've seen a few movies try and do what The Princess Bride did, but they just failed. I might like them, but I can never love them the way I love The Princess Bride.

Peter Falk is the grandfather. He's the one reading the kid the story.

That part didn't really need to be there, but it was cute.
