Come now, there were some really excellent episodes in the original series... only a few were total crap, most were at least watchable, but the ones that were truly excellent, those were ground-breaking in terms of what good sci-fi should be. You totally have to watch at least "City on the Edge of Forever," "The Trouble With Tribbles," and "Balance of Terror." The average quality of Star Trek: The Next Generation was indeed a bit higher, but I wouldn't dis the original series by any means. It's a timeless classic, even if it is extremely cheesy at times.
