My machine runs Vista. Perhaps that makes the difference from your Windows 7.

Yes, possible software interactions are vast in number. Still, hundreds of Firefox users have reported similar difficulties.

I have the same problem the last few weeks with Opera and Flash. I get the "need latest version flash" notice when I try to watch videos, but it isn't consistent; some Utube videos work some don't. I run preview copy of Windows 8, 64bit. Have recently updated both Opera and Flash. Don't know which triggered. Have to switch to IE to watch affected videos where they play fine.

I hope I have it fixed. You need a special version of FP for browsers that use plug-ins, like Firefox. The usual Adobe download page supposedly identifies your browser type and gives you the right FP. That might not work. I downloaded Flash Player 11 from the following page, specifically the version for browsers using plug-ins. So far, I've had no trouble, although as soon as I post this I probably will. I'll check back tomorrow and let you know.
