I've always thought that APPLE worked very hard at being ahead of lots of people with its new inventions and the technology they create. That, to me, was STeve Jobs' greatest success -- look into the future and seeing the BIG PICTURE and not shooting for the average or merely OK.

I think that APPLE Corp sees what the rest of the world is just beginning to notice - China's workers are underpaid and overworked.

There's going to be a backlash against companies with factories in China.

So Apple moves to build an assembly plant in the USA ahead of everyone else and amidst the coming consumer screams and worries over foreign labor, they get a pass because they are moving away from China.

As for your last question -- {silence}

Apple may have been influenced by the now relatively low cost of industrial energy in the US.

New technologies have unlocked vast quantities of natural gas in shale rock. Gas prices have fallen dramatically and are continuing to fall as more and more gas becomes available. The result is that the US now has the lowest energy costs in the industrial world. US gas is about 1/3 the price of gas in France or Germany, and about 1/6 the price of gas in Japan.

This is a bonanza for industries using gas as fuel, but especially industries like plastics, chemicals, and fertilizer, which use gas in their manufacturing processes. Because of this new cheap energy, both US and foreign companies have started building new factories in the US, repatriating jobs that were once outsourced. This is reversing the dismal outflow of the last few decades.

An Egyptian fertilizer manufacturer is building a $1.4 billion fertilizer plant in Iowa. It's the largest U.S. fertilizer plant built in 20 years.

Dow Chemical and Chevron Phillips Chemical Company are both planning new multibillion-dollar chemical plants in Texas and Louisiana. Royal Dutch Shell is planning an ethylene plant in Pennsylvania.

Fertilizer maker CF Industries will spend $2 billion boosting its U.S.-based production through 2016. The company's CEO, Steve Wilson, says cheap domestic manufacturing has led to "a complete 180-degree change in our thought process."

Some of the world's biggest companies are lining up to make new investments: Occidental Chemical Company, Chevron Philips Chemical, Formosa Plastics, LyondellBasell Industries, and Eastman Chemical have all announced plans to either build or reopen new energy and chemical plants in the U.S.

A new industry is forming around conversion of gas into a transportation fuel, either compressed or liquified. Some big trucks are already running on liquified natural gas. The House shot down a bill to offer tax credits for liquified gas use as truck fuel, but it's still happening.

Maybe Apple is joining the parade. Wages are rising in China, and there's been labor unrest at the big company that works for Apple. With lower energy costs back home and more competitive wages, it might pay.

Since Apple has been caught using Foxcon for much of their manufacturing, they are facing backlash already. You remember Foxcon, don't you? That is the Chinese computer component maker whose plants employ 8 year old kids and are surrounded with high fences topped with razor wire. The fence is not to keep out intruders; it is to keep the workers in.

Never, ever even have a fleeting thought of positive motives for any huge multi-national company.

Where are they going to find workers in the US who'll work 120 hours/week for $2/year?

Speed, Foxcon is the company that's had major labor unrest. They were forced to shorten workers' hours.

Foxytaur, Cthulhu looks good in a suit. Lovecraft might have been more appreciative if he'd seen him that way.

Didn't see Cthulhu in that vid, unless that was him waving hello in the last shot.

I hear there were lots of suicides at foxcon. I wonder if theres leaked info about the conditions for workers there.like viral vids. Scary for a job that deserves more merit and pay. then again it's mostly machines that do the work of building the parts. assembly of units however is highly prescriptive requiring little thought on how to put stuff together. If A and B fit together move on to step C blah, blah, blah and so forth.
