The Princess brought the vid home the other night. We watched. Usually most of the movies he brings I'll watch for a few minutes and go back to work in the office. This one I stayed and watched, liked it 70% or so. Could have had more pizzazz. Took 3 bottles of ale to get thru it, tho. Have seen it on stage - much better, but much different, of course, than a movie.

Strange for me to think of applause in movie theaters...

The last time was recent

-- ARGO got some clapping at the end. It's a patriotic thing and that's OK.

-- The trailer for the original MONSTERS INC was so good, people laughed out loud and cheer. The trailer was like a standup routine between John Goodman and BIlly Crystal and when those two get going making funny they make everyone laugh...

I don't remember any applause for anything Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Star Wars, Dark Night Batman,... I'd have to go way back to CINERAMA and some of those great screen epics like How the West Was Won and Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Lawrence of Arabia, Dr Zhivago.

Wait Until Dark in College...

And then there was Woodstock, the Movie. (through a cloud of pungent smoke)

Been a long, long time since I heard clapping in a movie theatre. No quite as long as to be overwhelmed by the clouds of cig smoke, overwhelmed even when I was contributing to it.

I really don't miss either one. Always seemed stupid to me to applaud a movie...

cig smoke ...

WOODSTOCK?

uh, what?

it wasn't cigarettes that they were smoking.

(You should have heard the theater shake when Country Joe and the Fish did the FISH call...)

Applauding for a movie does seem strange at first. What people are doing is communicating their approval to others in the theater. Emotion is strengthened by being shared.
