Name you tablet Launcher, Computer graphical shell interface of choice
Soo many to choose from with Linux, Windows and android
We all love customzation whether for a medium, minimalist or bloated experience
well here goes my GUI shell preferences:
Windows: Blackbox(yeah!!!!!!!....nothing like a dark simple interface thats low on resources)
Android: ADW EX has replaced nova launcher for me. Seems the most stable for me currently
Linux: This one's tough LXDE or JWM(the simpler on resource CPU intensive threads the better. The GNOME desktop environment is a real hog. Dunno about KDE)
Please, share your experiences with frontend graphical interfaces. there's soo many out there I can't even keep up to tabs with them all.

I have been enjoying XFCE. Its very much like GNOME2 which I miss very much but had to abandon GNOME since version 3 came out. I swear, GNOME developers seem to think that all computers are tablets now. I never like LXDE very much. It has always felt incomplete to me.

Dare I mention that tablet that is made by a company with a logo of a piece of fruit with a bite taken out of it?

Re: Name you tablet Launcher, Computer graphical shell interface of choice
I have an IPAD but I'm not using it like a tablet computer.
It is a nice IPAD, easy to use and carry around. Takes OK pictures and if I wanted could substitute for my computer. It a cadillac like my MacBook Pro.
However, being alone at home most of the time with a computer hard wired to the internet and never more than 25 feet away, what do I need a phone that surfs or a table to carry from kitchen ot living room to bedroom to that computer?
I mean, how much connectibility does one man need?
ANd for those of you who's eyes glaze over like computer zombies and drone out MORE, MORE, I say...
Go to it. Have at it. Good luck. It's not for me.

I think at some point apple will release widgets and different scheme when swiping those icons on the screen. meantime they really didn't change the layout, I found this to be kinda boring.
Presentation man, presentation.
Same screen icon flipping look gets dull. Come on apple, spice things up a bit.
You have to admit Dave the iOS look gets kinda old.
NB = Meanwhile with team windows 8. Dunno but I don't think I can get use to the Metro. It's functional yet somehow looks plain at the same time.

Oh yeah, I forgot about linux having fluxbox too. Man that one's an old window manager. Though ive always wondered how do you get libraries to install layers on top of fluxbox to give it a sexy glowy translucent look. Some ultra linux hardcore fans that know how to script can really know how to sexyify the look of graphical interface.
I think it's when you cross Gnome 3 libraries with fluxbox. either way is very sleek and futuristic. I don't know how to pull it off

Speaking of window managers have any of you tried compiz fusion?.....
Sadly my pops PC uses an older ATI card but how have the linux fglrx drivers changed nowadays?
Are the ATI drivers better than nvidias proprietary one's?
Above (first line) is an example of compiz fusion
Anyone have a powerful dedicated videocard to run compiz fusion?
its been a while since ive run that bloated software but boy was it funky and pretty and cool.
Now see if only windowz can do that shit too

I played a bit with it on intel's integrated video card and decided, that it was not worth the trouble (and it had trouble with playing video). Nor was it convenient to work with.
But that was in 2009. May be things changed.
As for the drivers - if it is older card, forget about fglrx, use opensource drivers. They will be better.

Re: Name you tablet Launcher, Computer graphical shell interface of choice
I have no idea what most of you are talking about.
Blackbox, I thought were in Airplanes and not really black.
Gnome, I thought was a little man with a white beard and a pointy hat, that does TV commercials, and stands in your landscaping.
I am not sure if I would like the New windows versions. I hate Windows Vista, and 7.
I don't care for Apple. I have a Samsung Galaxy SII phone. I have gotten used to it. Can anyone tell me about Samsung's tablets? Is the Acer laptop with Google any good?

Re: Name you tablet Launcher, Computer graphical shell interface of choice
Eunuchus, this thread is about the graphical click and drag environmnts that operating systems use. some really drag a PC down and are heavy slowing the speed of your device. others are lean and simple. Others fit somewhere in between the middle. the desktop evironment windows uses should be familiar to you. Though it hasn't changed much if at all. the entire function that handles your windows desktop environment run through a file called explorer.exe found in your system C:/System32 directory.
Often viruses and spyware target this file to run their nasty code. And you get PC slow downs as a result. Other operating systems such as linux and android give you the freedom to choose your desktop environment of choice. the thread is about sharing which one's are your fav to use and if you have new shell programs , well share them. there's so many out there i can't keep up with them.
The new generation window managers and desktop environemnts take advantage of videocards so that you wont tax performance on your processors
I think the most painful thing for example when running windows is when you load up your steam account and suddenly out of nowhere you get a message pop up say "error: there has been a fatal exception with explorer.exe" and it force closes on you. but you see everything ties in with this damn explorer.exe system program and the only solution to this is to reinstall the operating system and try again at installing the game you want to play on steam.
I don't think once has microsoft has ever changed much of the integrity with some of its system files. especially that pesky explorer.exe which chews over 30-40% of your processor(running i7 at that too) power. I dare you load up "task manager" and see how much of a pig it is. I call for a change of shell program.
When I run blackbox for example my processor drops to 5-9% when in idle
