If harsh punishments worked then they'd never have to be used. The fact that there are still thieves in places that chop off hands and the fact that there are still murderers in places with capital punishment means they don't work.the reason is that the cincriminal mind doesn't work like that. They don't think they will be caught or their mental state is not caring about the future sure to drugs, emotion, our mental illness. the reason I don't murder isn't because tthere is capital punishment,-our is because I simply don't feel like killing, our raping, our stealing.

So good people don't need laws to stay good and bad people don't heed laws. The proof is that we can fill up the jails.

Please do not forget rape is about power and control. If the penis is missing there are plenty of phallic items that can be used to rape.

I totally disagree with the concept of amputation as a means of punishment for the same reason that I oppose the death penalty; you can't reverse the punishment if the accused is subsequently found to be innocent. There have been too many instances in the UK where innocent men have been wrongly imprisoned for rape or murder. This is often because intense media interest puts pressure on the Police to find a culprit. So the Police pick the local eccentric, make sure the "evidence" fits, and present an apparently clear case to the Court. It can take many years before the injustice is corrected. Removal of body parts as a punishment would make a bad situation even worse.

I find Africa or at least the majority of that continent fucked beyond repair. Disagree with me, that's fine but how could you deliver real progress when the majority are dirt poor and starving, aids is rampant, and majority lack education?

People forget that the ten comandments, egyptian book of the dead and modern day bible all somewhat plagiarize(surprised guys?) from ancient sumerian srolls, texts and when you think about it. As we evolved , our ignorance deeply ingrained in those texts also grew tenfold and you get the modern day radicals and traditionalists you see today.

I always viewed religion as the beacon for our transgressions. A means to carry on the ignorance without feeling guilty of our actions bc the bible or quran for example is a supposed "benchmark" of ethics to follow when taken literally to the teeth.

Religion isn't completely bad. It has good in it. Some basic concepts of humanism. It's just it's soo tainted with our erroneous human ways that well deeply entrenched people will never understand.

What surprises me is given how intelligent we are as a race; why the fuck do we follow an out of date book for our answers?

The problem is... people are potentially sentient. It really depends on many things.

And one more thing, differentiate the crowd and separate people. To quote Men in Black:

A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it.

Religion... it is an interesting thing. In extreme case it gives you all the answers, without the need to think.

Religion gives us basic concepts of humanism?? May be, at its foundation time. But if you count all the bad things done in the name of god and religion, I do not think, that the balance is positive.
