Happy Birthday, Andrew!

Had that exam scheduled a bit close to the birthday, didn't you? Bummer of a way to celebrate turning 39 again, isn't it?!

It was 45 years ago today, on my 13th birthday, that Sputnik One went into orbit. This event is mostly forgotten nowadays, but it sure stirred things up 45 years ago. Those who would like a good book about the subject can read SPUTNIK, The Shock Of The Century, by Paul Dickson, published by Walker and Company. I have told the story of my reaction in several fanzines, so doubt if it needs to be repeated again. But it made a major impact on my life, for sure.

So what did I do today, my 58th birthday? Stopped by the vets to pick up a three month supply of ADVANTAGE for Pearly’s anti-flea program. Also bought another ten pound bag of her Hills Prescription Diet Feline K/D. Both came to $74.24, close enough to my proposed budget of $70/month for Pearly’s upkeep, spread over 12 months to include an annual visit to the vet. I also stopped by the local pet store to pick up two “Cat dancers”, one hand-held and the other now attached to the wall in Pearly’s room. However, when I laid the package of ADVANTAGE on my bedroom dresser, Pearly saw the package, recognized it from the last time, and promptly went under the bed. She doesn’t seem to like the stuff being put on her shoulders, but I’ll try to do it tomorrow. Maybe she will be willing to play with the cat dancer?

I also picked up my new eyeglasses, for which I had paid $260, and paid another $260 for a second set. That second pair of glasses will be kept in the glove compartment of my car as an emergency spare should the first one be lost, stolen, or broken. I bought two this year since I might not have the money next year. And if you’re wondering why they are so expensive, here is the prescription:

Sphere Cylinder Axis

Right -6.75 -2.00 010

Left -1.00 -0.75 110

The lower bifocals are +2.25. I needed high index glass to reduce the double vision in the right eye caused by the thick lens. At that, there is still some double vision in the right eye, although nowhere near as bad as with the previous prescription, and it only corrects to about 20/30 or 20/40. The left eye is now back to 20/20. Since I’ve never had binocular vision in my entire life, this is no big deal. The Post Office is also obligated to give me a set of safety glasses to this prescription, but that could take a year or more to come through.

My final trip was to the bank to buy a cashiers check for $275, representing my Chapter 13 payment due 9 October, but which will be handed to the Trustee at the 24 October hearing. I have enough left in my checking account to carry me through to next Friday, my next paycheck.

And at 6:30 PM it was my usual 12 step meeting of PUTIN’ SOBER, a Bikers Meeting, and their banner reads “Ride Hard, Ride Sober, Ride Free”. But they welcome non-bikers, and I seem to fit right in. They have nicknamed me “Hot-Flash Harry” from my repeated fan use.

And so I’ll go to bed now. Pearly is meowing on the bed, but I think I’ll wait until tomorrow morning to try and put on the Advantage.

Yours Aye
