The only thing, so far, I've found from Amazon Prime that you can't get on other devices is "borrowing" a book. With a Prime membership and a Kindle device you can borrow one book a month for free. You have to request the book from a Kindle device. Having Kindle on your PC or another device won't work.

I've borrowed a few, but the selection isn't such that it would have convinced me to buy a Kindle, if I didn't already have one. You can pretty well get everything else from Prime, movies, books, and such, on other devices.

If you're reading e-books on your PC, you definitely need a tablet. Reading a book on a tablet is a whole different experience from reading one on a PC. I read everything, e-books, newspapers, and magazines on my tablet. I have a subscription to National Geographic, for instance. The tablet version includes videos you wouldn't get from the print version. I have an app for it on my IPad, which, in my opinion, has better apps than does the Android devices.

I had the old Kindle Fire, and I was looking for a new mini tablet. I bought the 32 GB version of the Nexus 7, and it is a beauty. It automatically linked to my Google account and loaded all the apps I had on my other Android devices. I've checked out the IPad mini, and I'm not at all impressed by it. The only advantage it has is its ability to run Apple apps. The Nexus 7 has GPS, Google maps and access to Youtube, which the new Apple OS eliminated on their devices. If you're looking for an all around mini tablet, I'd give the nod to the Nexus 7.

Turns out, I bought a new Kindle Fire, but for different reasons. My old Kindle Fire died. I bought the new, improved, version of the old Kindle Fire not the Kindle Fire HD. I'm allowed to read ebooks at work, but I can't use any device that has a camera, because of my access to sensitive info that they don't want photographed. This version, although improved over the one I had, has no camera. It was $159. Since I'm a user of Amazon Prime, it's also advantageous to have a Amazon Kindle device. You get some things you can't get through a Kindle app on a third party device.

OK now I am confused again, (not hard) the best tablet is a Nexus 7, however it does not play nice with Amazon prime? but Kindle of course does because that's from Amazon. or did I miss something? as I thought I could get prime and it would work fine on a Nexus?

You can get the Kindle app on the Nexus, but there are certain things you have as a Prime member you can't get on a third party, not Amazon, Kindle. If you have an Amazon Kindle device you can "borrow" books, but as far as I know, you can't on a Kindle app on another device that isn't an Amazon Kindl

Prime, you might reconsider the Kindle Fire. Amazon definitely encourages you to buy their devices. The connection to Amazon Prime is much more seamless on an Amazon Kindle than it is on other devices.

OK one last question I think, so I get a kindle and down load a book, can I move that book/file to my pc? I may have asked that already, maybe I should re read the thread first.

Dunno about the Kindle, but I downloaded a book from Amazon. Can't copy it to a disk, can't copy it from my PC to my laptop, can't print it. I bought it, I own the rights to my copy, they are denying them. Last Kindle book I will buy.

If it's a borrowed book, you can not. It is only available on your Kindle device. I'm not sure why you would want to. While I love reading ebooks on a tablet, I hate sitting at a computer to read them. Any Kindle book you buy, you can download to any device, but you can't print them or copy them to a file. I don't have a problem with that, because I'm only going to read them on one of my tablets anyway. I can even read them on a smart phone, if that's all I have with me. I rarely go anyplace without a tablet, though. I can start a book on one tablet, switch to another one, and Amazon keeps track of where I was in the book, and I can jump to there, if I want.

I don't remember the last time I bought a

hard copy of a book, and I read or listen to 4 or 5 books a month. I subscribe to Audible.com and listen to most of them on my phone or tablet.

Even my magazine subscriptions come to my tablet.

Right, if you're buying the book from Amazon, you can read it on any device which will run their Kindle software.

If you're 'acquiring' the book, you're on your own to get it from device to device.

Krister, you may not be able to print it, but I do believe you can back it up. Not via 'official' channels though.

There are other advantages, other than the ability to borrow books, if you have Amazon Prime and a Kindle device, text to speech and x-ray, which with a click will give detailed info about the movie you're watching or about the book you're reading. Amazon definitely tosses in goodies to encourage you to buy one of their devices.

For an all around mini, I think the Nexus 7 is best, but for someone that's an Amazon Prime customer and gets most of their stuff from Amazon, I'd probably go with the Kindle Fire HD.
