PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida -- A teenager is recovering after

police say he shot himself in the penis and testicle while cleaning a gun he just bought.

It happened Thursday morning at a home on the 200 block of Verada Street in Port St. Lucie.

Police say 18-year-old Michael Smeriglio first lied to police saying someone shot him while he was walking down the street. After being questioned by police he admitted to accidentally doing it himself.

Doctors say the bullet went through his penis, his left testicle and then lodged itself in his thigh.

Smeriglio told police he bought the gun last month at a party.

Once it is in the police log, any almost competent reporter can pick it up. It is a nice touch using the vic's name, though.

It's worse than that, on Huffington Post article they post two big pictures of him from his Facebook page.

Basically, any major news outlet should have a policy that self-injury is like a sex crime and the "victim"'s name shouldn't be published. I know that in this case the guy seems to be an obvious loser, but basically they are compounding the situation by essentially bullying him. Actually, there should be a law that self-harm doesn't fall into a newsworthy category ...

On the other hand, I suspect he shot it off on purpose -- I can totally see someone with eunuch tendencies, especially when high, doing that. The pictures show him to be not very masculine looking and maybe he had issues in that regard.

Did he really shoot it off? Never said he shot it off, though that's a logical conclusion, however, it depends on the caliber and location. The doctors said the bullet went through his penis and testicle. What part of the penis did it go through? If it went through near the base, doubtful that he'll ever have another erection, but if it went through closer to the glans, well then the doctors might have salvaged most of his penis. That'd be the best case scenario. Hopefully, though he was foolish, he'll be able to have sex somewhere down the line, but here's the dreaded question from his sex partner? What happened to your penis? It'll probably look somewhat deformed. It's amazing that this kind of thing happens more than you think:

A policeman shot off his partner's penis in a bizarre accident in Peru. Siloe Espinoza and Baiver Ruelas were changing into their uniforms at Lima police station. Espinoza pulled his revolver out of its holster to check if it was loaded and accidentally shot Ruelas. The bullet hit Ruelas in the genitals and fellow officers found Espinoza giving him first aid. Doctors said Ruelas lost a lot of blood but his condition was stable. They are considering carrying out reconstructive surgery in an attempt to repair the damage.
