Quebec Whodunit: 1/4 of Province’s Syrup Reserves Go Missing

By David George-Cosh, August 31, 2012, 12:28 PM ET

http://blogs.wsj.com/canadarealtime/201 ... o-missing/

Forget about the upcoming election in Quebec, the big news out of the province is the huge breach of the province’s strategic reserve of maple syrup.

Sticky-fingered thieves made off with almost 30 million Canadian dollars (US$30.4 million) worth of maple syrup from a reserve warehouse in rural Quebec, the provincial body responsible for managing the production of maple syrup said late Thursday. That’s more than a quarter of the province’s extra supply—stored each year to protect producers’ from the ups and downs of global supply and demand.

Late last week, the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers found empty barrels that had contained some 10 million pounds of maple syrup during a routine inventory check at a facility located in St-Louis-de-Blandford, a small town about 100 miles north east of Montreal. (Though the group didn’t specify, that works out to more than 15,000 oil drum-style barrels.)

While strategic reserves are typically linked to oil and other industry-sensitive commodities, Quebec has kept a vast store of maple syrup since 2000 to be used if supply of the quintessential Canadian staple falls with poor yields, or higher-than-expected demand.

The Federation said it takes great precautions to protect producers’ harvests.

“The St-Louis-de-Blandford warehouse had been secured by a fence and locks, and visited regularly,” said Serge Beaulieu, the federation’s president. “The sales agency’s maple syrup inventory is spread across several storage locations which were not subject to theft.”

Quebec police are investigating the matter, said spokesman Sgt. Ronald McInnis.

Quebec produces about 75% of all of the world’s maple syrup. The province has the ideal spring conditions of warm days and cool evenings that allow the sap to accumulate in maple trees that is later refined into the golden-hued liquid. The theft comes at an inopportune time, with bad weather leading to low supplies in the U.S., increasing global dependence on Quebec’s supply.

Prior to the theft, the federation had accumulated 37 million pounds of maple syrup in its reserves. It plans to consolidate its reserves into a new, larger warehouse later this year.

Despite the theft, the Federation said that there would be no immediate impact on world-wide syrup supply.

I can certainly see the temptation.

A-1 "Fancy" grade Maple Syrup retails, typically, for around $10.00 CDN (that's the same as USD these days) for a 500ml bottle.

That's 20 bucks a litre!

Commodity/wholesale prices would probably be around a quarter of that, making it still about four times the price of milk.

The thieves will have been either Montreal mafia (Rizuto family, most likely; they aren't ALL dead yet and they and some croonies still operate, mostly in drugs and construction) or a forward-thinking oriental gang.

What a haul. One wonders how they will unload it on the market? It's too much product to move/sell/store without too many people knowing about it.

Even if found, it'd be questionable if it could be packaged and sold; it's a raw food product in bulk... hardly safe.

That said....

... anyone wanna buy a litre of maple syrup for cheap, and on a completely unrelated note, can someboddyyy pleelease helllp mmmmeeee cccclleaaaaan mmmy ssttittiiccckkky kkeeyyyyboarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd keeeeeeeeeeeeeys?

If the sticky stuff is really stored in barrels, one wonders how it was spirited away. To empty 15,000 barrels would take a lot of time. I'm led to wonder if there was ever any syrup in them. The "ghost" syrup might never have existed. It could have been credited to the reserve fraudulently by the perpetrator(s). The province might have bought a lot of thin air or blue sky much like Billy Sol Estes sold in the 1950s and 60s Read about him at www.wikipedia.org.

I seriously suspect a swindle much on the lines of this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tino_De_Angelis

Tino DeAngelis cornered the Salad Oil Market and as that scheme fell apart, they discovered that a storage tank of huge proportions was fitted with a chamber on top so that when a man climbed it and went to the supposed entry to the tank, he sampled a tiny ten foot or so deep tank and not the seawater beneath.

DeAngelis sold approximately (if memory serves me right) 110 to 125% of all salad oil in the world. Which should give us all pause or turn heads simply at reading that statement.

Why don't you remember the Great Salad Oil Swindle that nearly destroyed the NYSE and bankrupted several firms?

Well it hit on November 22, 1963 early in the morning and by late afternoon, other matters were on the country's mind.

Hey, Dave, I recall the salad oil scandal. And while I was looking for it, I found "the olive oil scandal." Google it and you'll find more interesting commodity fraud.

Glad somebody above mentioned the olive-oil conspiracy.

Anybody else hear of this?

Apparently, according to a major release book coming out soon and some news stories I've read, OLIVE OIL you buy in the stores is NOT. It's only a percentage.

The Scicilian mafia has taken over.

They mix it with canola (or other, cheaper) oil and sell that.

"Bertolli" is a brand you see in stores all the time; that company is wholly owned (above or below board) by the Mafia, and that shit is NOT what it says it is. "Pure virgin" olive oil is almost impossible to find anymore.

I've heard that about Olive Oil today and I'm not prepared to go into any depth of discussion about Olive Oil and the Mafia.

However,

Back in 1963, Tino DeAngelis didn't actually "own" the oil, he owned the futures to buy the oil and the giveaway on how outrageous his scheme was is that he owned more salad quality oil than existed in the world.

The reason no one remembers the Salad Oil Swindle as it is called, is that the morning on Nov 22, 1963 when the Stock and commodities Markets opened and the banks called in Tino DeAngelis's loans (he couldn't pay them, of course) the market really did crash and at least two stock firms were bankrupted with it. That was the morning disaster. At approximately 12:30 Central Time in the afternoon, President Kennedy was assassinated and nothing was the same. Within the hour after the assassination, the Stock Market was shut down. That was a Friday. Kennedy's funeral was held on the following Monday (Nov 25, 1963) and while the nation was focused on the funeral, the NYSE met in executive session and moved all the stock accounts from the two failed firms involved in the Salad Oil Swindle into viable firms so that the stock holders and regular customers would not suffer and quietly closed down the remaining portions of the firms involved in the swindle. The public barely took notice as salad oil was the last thing on their mind at the time.
