Bone Fractures and the common eunuch
This past Friday night I experienced my first ever bone fracture. It happened when I was trying to walk around my dog and ended up jamming my foot full-force into the leg of a chair. It bent my toe out at a 45-degree angle from normal. OUCH!
My question is have any of you had a similar toe breaking experience, and if you have, what was done other than taping it to the adjacent toe? I took the tape off for the first tape change last night and my toe was still at an awkward angle even after the doctor had reduced the fracture.
I see a podiatirst in my future...

Sorry, not much one can do about toe fractures - they don't cast or splint them. You may want to see the podiatrist ASAP - see if he can set it any better before it starts setting
Re: Bone Fractures and the common eunuch
I am very very sorry to hear of the toe. It happened to me. Was walking swiftly across the living room and bashed it soundly into a desk. Later went to bed and was in pain all night long. Woke up, looked down, toe at 45 degree angle. Roommate wouldn't drive me to the ER either heheh.
Once I got there the doctor grimaced and made this "icky icky poo poo" sign with her hands as she knew what it was like after having broken a toe herself in the past.
I really do hate to be the bearer of bad news Losethem, as there is no good news. It is painful and will stay that way for some time. There are moments when I wished they had just cut it off. They didn't splint or cast my toe either but I did tape it to the big toe (having broken the index toe).
Where I went wrong and my advice to you: After I broke it I started sitting (unconsciously) with my toes flat to the floor and the rest of my foot at an angle up-wards. This caused it to heal so that when my foot is flat to the ground, that toe isn't. Be conscious of this! Keep your feet flat to the floor as much as possible while healing.
In the mean time, at least for me, a general anethetic would have been in order. The only thing that hurts worse are broken ribs.
Again, sorry.

Do you get bone scans to make sure that this wont be an on going problem, or was it a one of accident? I am what they call pre-ostio so I am making sure to keep an eye on my calcium and get scanned regularly,

Re: Bone Fractures and the common eunuch
I broke the toe next to my big toe kicking a guy in the face. It was really stupid, I already had him beat, he was down on the ground. I could have just walked away. But no, I decide one more hit and I hit the side of his head and I immediately knew something was wrong. He got up and was basically unhurt other than perhaps a few bruises. But, yeah not much you can do about it. But as my dad would say. "it'll feel better when it quits hurting".

Chop that toe off, Tal! hehe
Somehow, I am thinking this trot across the room was cat related.

Close, it was dog related. He thinks he needs to be in the traffic patterns of where we humans walk to attain maximum petting opportunities.
It was an accident. I was going past the dog and my foot went to far towards a chair.
I did go see my GP today and he's going to try to get me a podiatry consult, but he also said they would likely yawn at this. I did manage to get a boot today that is helping to hold it more in line to what it should be doing. The pain has returned but the toe is in MUCH better alignment, still not perfect, but I know with this type of injury it's likely not going to be.
Sadly, I have a job where I have to stand on my feet the entire shift, so I'm not working right now. My October vacation has gone out the window because they are making me use my entire time-off bank for this injury. Color me annoyed. I've been waiting for this vacation for 18-months!
I'll survive.

A supply side nutritional approach to speedy bone healing.
You do NOT make bone, out of a empty space.
First a cartilage matrix forms.
Two essential amino acids, Proline and Hydroxyproline.
The white stuff at the end of bones.
Jello and Jelled Soup. Not agar. There is no vegetarian source.
Best as 5 grain Gelatin Capsules. Besides a hi gelatin/jello diet take a few caps
a few times a day with,
with
BioC Complete, a 500mg Vit C with at least 100mg bioflavinoids and 50mg rutin. Common formula.
There have been failures when just C. was used.
Vitamin C with Vitamin P is the mason. Gelatin (proline, hydroxyproline) is the bricks.
Now you are favoring Cartilage matrix formation with stuff your diet has probably lacked.
Now the calcium replaces the cartilage and voila - bone.
This formula was applied to two "extreme" ortho cases and the surgeon independently commented on the speedy healing. Old folk with non healing fractures have healed.
G'Luck.
Moi
I call it supply side biochemistry because I designed the program in the Reagan years.
A biochemical reaction can go left or right depending on the balance of stuff on each side
of the reaction. Supply side boost the reaction toward the desirable product.
Biochem. A, A, A. Organic Chem B, A, A.

Re: Bone Fractures and the common eunuch
This thread reminds me of the one and only time I had a broken bone and it was the big toe on my right foot. I was plowing snow and doing one of the drive through lanes at a bank. My plow kicked up a storm drain cover. I got out of my truck, picked up the cover to put it back over the drain. It had a coating of ice and was slippery. I lost my grip and that damn piece of cast iron landed squarely on my foot. It was agonizing. An X-Ray revealed my toe was split length wise and there was nothing that could be done except take over the counter pain relievers. I'll never forget that one. Please, no lectures about steel toe boots. They're effective but your feet freeze in those things because the steel toe is cold too.
