Although I am on the "Do Not Call List", repeatedly registered

I get those calls.

My new manner to "Screw Them" is as follows.

Kindly ask them to hold a moment,

place them on speakerphone and confirm they are still there

and of course please wait a moment.

Then ignore them until . . .

If members, no not those members;

if members take this thread to :hearthrob and share their creative, "Screw Them" scripts;

I will share how to screw your HOA.

Thanks Moi. I had an unwanted call this evening from a guy asking me to make a claim for an accident that I never had. I asked him to wait a moment, put him on the speakerphone, then I disappeared to my kitchen and carried on baking. I shall use this technique again. Thank you.

For charitable donations, I interrupt them with "I do that at my office" (I'm retired, so that's a lie) and hang up.

If it it's a politician on a recording, I hang up.

Mostly just hang up or on the cellphone push the little button to make it go to voice mail without a sound.

A simple "dont ever call this number again" also works, remember you know their number.

#1) My grand kids have full permission to mess with telemarketers. When asked if I'm home one of their favorite responses is, "He's on vacation." If asked when I'll return they answer, "He just left for the Thousand Islands and will spend a week on each one."

#2) I repeatedly get calls from a heavy handed outfit soliciting blood donations. Despite my frequent claims to be HIV+ they keep calling. Go figure.

I like to let them think I really want to buy something from them, but they need to just hold on a minute. Then after way too long, I pick up the phone and say "are you still there?". And when they answer I say "ok, be just another minute." The idea is to see how long I can keep them waiting before they realize they have been had. My record is 22 minutes and I made them hold four consecutive times while assuring them it wouldn't be long.

Years ago in another life, every 6 weeks I would get a call from kiddy photo, they always wanted to come out and take pictures of my child. I was not married and did not have any kids yet.

I finally got tired of them calling and asked if they had background scenery , they said YES> (they knew they had a live one) I then asked if they had costumes? YES again, so I added that my five year old sometimes wanted to be a princess and other times a cowgirl. They had everything they needed, so we set the time Saturday at 11 am.

It was August HOT and no parking, I was mowing my lawn when I see this guy get out of his car half a block away, he had several large long tubes, Scenery. a couple suite cases Costumes, and of course his tripod and camera case, as he loaded this all up not wanting to make two trips he headed my way.

When he came through my gate I turned the Lawn mower off and asked if I could help him?

Yes he said I am hear looking for and said my name, to take pictures of your daughter, wiping the sweat off his forehead.

I look at him and said, I don't have any kids, I am not even married.

He looks at me, disgusted with somebody not sure who and said that he was sorry and there must be some mistake.

I said, No mistake, and when you get back to your office would you please take me off your phone list, because I have told them this several times and they never listen to me.

I smiled at him.

He then realized, I just wasted his whole day.

I never got a call from them again.

I'd have said "I have a son, not a daughter..." and watch his response. I wonder, actually, just how open minded he would be. Any way, I wouldn't leave him hanging too much longer before breaking the news I was just wanting a face-to-face to get off their call list.

- First folks, please, please do remember, it's the COMPANIES you are angry with, not the poor, unfortunate schlub who is trying desperately to pay his rent by taking the worlds shitiest job. Some of these folks hate doing what they do as much as you hate them. Don't be TOO rude to the telemarketers, and please... PLEASE avoid using the loud horn trick.

I was once 19 years old, between jobs, waiting for a new job to start and took a job at the city newspaper selling subscriptions by phone. I got the air-horn treatment during a really, really bad day that was already full of strangers yelling and being rude to me. I fuckin' cried in frustration right at my desk, on display to 20 other slobs in the same boat as me.

That being said, I'm cool with getting bitchy at repeated calls. Here's how I treat most types of telemarketers:

- Legitimate charities; I've picked one, years ago, and donate whenever they call. For the rest, I thank them for calling and hit "End Call". "Thank you, not today! Click-buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz".

- pushy salesmen: same as part two above. "Thanks for calling, not interested, CLICK-buzzzzzzzz". Simple and brief.

(however if the same sales company calls again, I simply add 'take me off your list". If I get a third call, then I add that number to my 'do not ring' list on my phone. The calls get dumped).

- Political callers; I might listen to the spiel if I'm interested and bored. If I'm not interested, I just say I'm voting for the other guy and hang up.

- Automated calls: Hang up immediately, add to 'do not ring' list.

- Pollsters and other researchers; I actually usually answer their questions. This way I can influence data in what my mind sees as the correct way. However again, if I"m bored, just a quick "no thanks" and HANG UP.

I always try to be polite, even if they are a telemarketer. I try not to waste their time. Some of them only get paid by how many calls they make or how many sales they close. It is not the guy on the phone I dislike, it is the company.

I'll just say, "Not interested," and hang up.

Now if the guy will not take no for an answer, or (and I have had this happen.) They call me back within seconds of my hanging up... Then all bets are off.

I had a cable company that would not take no for an answer. Their salesman just kept calling (same guy each time.) So, I finally started to talk to him. I asked about channels, packages, promotions, installation. I actually made him read the entire legal contract to me over the phone. We were on the phone together for well over three hours. Finally when he asked for my payment info, I told him I changed my mind. When he started to get mad that I had intentionally wasted his time, I admitted it. I also told him he should have stopped calling after the first time I politely said I wasn't interested.

They never called again.

I respect people who work for a living, but I'm not afraid to punish you if you are an asshole.
