Wow, I'm Getting Old

Post by Paolo »

My friends often make fun of the gray in my short beard.

My gums have receded a bit.

I've had 1 tooth pulled, 1 tooth crowned.

I got bifocals last month.

My hair has thinned a bit more, but not too bad compared to the rate it was going, but...

The nose hair needed trimmed more often.

Regularity is something to take note of.

And to top it all off, I found a hair growing out of the little bump of my ear the other day.

Perhaps I need to seek advice from the truly old folks here?

River?

Address the issues one by one. Yeah, you need to add nose and ear hair to clipping the hair on top of your head. But that isn't that big a thing.

The big physical thing is keep the weight under control. I also look intensely for non-prescription solutions which sometimes mean a change of habit, which is never easy. For me, liquid vitamin B-12 keeps me from getting sick all the time (a change from about age 50). Fish oil seems to help mobility. I solved hypertension by limiting myself to one cup of coffee and trying to limit salt, which in the United States about the only way you can do that is the path thru celery and carrots, etc. at the supermarket.

The other big thing is keep life interesting. I can still climb mountains, but about 1/3 slower than 40 years ago. I also have less stamina for doing it day after day. But I have a big bank of experience which has moved me to another level in what I do. There are people here with a lot of interests. Say cars or whatever. Develop that interest and experience to keep yourself out doing new things and meeting new people.

I used to be an alcohol-based life form just fighting the boredom in life. Now as an old fart I find life so interesting and challenging that I rarely drink. I hope the same for you.

I have gotten old, 81.75 years, so I feel qualified to offer advice (not that I wouldn't anyway) . I don't see any complaint about pain. If you're fairly free of it, you're not old yet. When your body becomes a human barometer and you wake up aching all over because it's raining, you'll have arrived.

I used to be a heavy drinker and a glutton; now, oddly, I have little desire for either strong drink or food. A year ago, I weighed 260 lbs. Now I weigh 218 because eat only one fairly light meal per day and feel satisfied. It takes me about a year to finish a bottle of Scotch these days.

I used to take long walks, but now I have hammer-toes on both feet and the 0.2 mile hike to the Olympic pizzeria is about all I can manage. Overall, though, I don't feel at all bad and look about 10 years younger than my true age. I take 14 prescription drugs which, inter alia, allow me to eat and drink whatever I want to (admittedly not much). I also drink grape juice as an aid to my short-term memory which has definitely improved since I started taking it (post hoc ergo propter hoc ?)

I have had to give up some activities which I used to enjoy, such as painting and playing the harpsichord because peripheral neuropathy has made my hands numb. Still, I am enjoying life and am in no hurry to make my exit.

But then who is?

Carl Reiner was describing George Burns speaking of sex when you are really old.

"Like trying to get an oyster in a coin slot."

:-\ something to look forward to :-|

If I wasn't a born again virgin.
