On recommendation from one of my retired buddies who has plenty of time to send out daily emails, I downloaded a program called FileHippo. It is supposed to keep you notified of updates. When I go to "Start>All Programs" it shows as 'FileChecker' with the image of a partial owl head. However, it does not show that little arrowhead pointing to the right where, if you point there, gives you options such as 'uninstall.' Is this something bad and how can I get rid of it.
I run Windows XP on that computer and it seems like every time I turn it on, there is an update waiting. Is it possible that some clever people have figured out how to spy on a computer and disguise it reporting in as updates?

Re: Two Questions
When in doubt, rip it out.
You can go to the web and look up this product, get a review of it. That might be your best first step.

Re: Two Questions
I used FileHippo on a now defunct computer. I have no reason to think it was harmful but it wasn't all that helpful either. --FLO--

Re: Two Questions
FileHippo appears to be legitimate (not malware), but whether you need it or want it is another issue. It doesn't seem all that useful.

Re: Two Questions
In case you are still curious filehippo is legit. If you are running XP you should have software manager in your start menu. It is by Macrovision It checks for updates also.
