Man in Shanghai has penis amputated after infection from circumcision

The most interesting thing to me in this story is actually the comment that you can't legally get married in China until age of 22.

Man's penis amputated after botched circumcision

A 21-year-old man in Tianjin has had his penis cut off after what appears to be a botched circumcision procedure just two weeks before his wedding ceremony.

Xiaohe (not his real name) said he decided to go for circumcision before his big day but his wound would not recover following the operation, despite days of transfusion.

Immediately following operation on November 11, 2011, Xiaohe said he felt a sharp pain in his penis the day after, and his penis began to swell, eventually turning red, and then black as the cells and tissues in his penis began to die.

Doctors at various hospitals were unable to save Xiaohe's penis and the decision to amputate his penis was made on December 21, 2011.

He has now sued the hospital where he had the circumcision for a compensation of 150,000 yuan (23,833 USD).

Xiaohe's wife and former schoolmate, Xiaoli, also sued the hospital for compensation. Xiaohe was upfront with his fiance about the botched procedure, but she decided to go ahead with the wedding believing everything would turn out fine.

Xiaoli's claims have, however, been thrown out by the court, because Xiaohe was below the legal marriage age of 22 and hence their marriage was not officially recognised by the law.

Xiaohe's lawyer has also asserted that the doctor who performed the circumcision had no legal papers to be practising in Tianjin and urged authorities to punish the hospital.

Penis reconstruction surgery is available, but is a highly complex procedure which is unlikely to give Xiaohe a fully functional penis even if successful. Moreover, the operation, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars, is too much for Xiaohe's farmer family to bear.

I wonder if the marriage age applies to both males and females (too lazy to research it)? We know due to outdated ideas about the value of females that there is a growing disparity in the male:female ratio in China/India and other countries. I can't believe that mindset still persists in the world.

I went ahead and looked it up. In China a guy has to be 22 and a girl has to be 20.

I remember an incident years ago of a young man undergoing surgery for a undecended testicle just before he was to be married.

The doctor accidently severed his penis shaft during the surgery. Although the severed area was repaired, the nerves were cut and

scar tissue obstructed some blood flow to his cock.

Not sure if he ever got married but if he did he needed an understanding bride and lots of sex toys.

One more good reason to not have circumcision. Hard to believe legal marrying age is 22. In the "old days", many people barely lived to the age of 22. One reason why nature gave humans the ability to have sex and have children around 13 years of age. By the time the child was 10 or 15 years old, ready to have children themselves, their parents were dead. This kept the population in balance. But today, with marvelous medical care, we live much longer, and multiple generations pile up on top of prior generations, and the population has gone forth and multiplied.....to a point of excess I might add.

I am amazed at how quickly the "circumcision -vs- non-circumcision" debate can escelate to insane levels of hostility from all sides, so I hesitate to offer any comment what-so-ever on the subject. I TRY to hold what seems to me to be the closest to neutral or center ground on the subject, that being "let who ever wants circumcision have it and who does not want it let them keep their extra skin." Unfortunately, for a person to wisely decide such a thing, they need to be adult, or young adult at least.

I am circumcised, and it was not my choice, the choice was made for me when I was born - I sort of think that since it is my penis, I should have been the one to make the decision, maybe when I was 15 or 16 years old. I personally am happy that I am circucised (PLEASE- I do NOT want to hear all the numerous arguments against circumcision or for it.)

Now to get back to the subject of this thread, I really wonder WHY at age 22, this guy decided to get the circumcision? I mean, most people who get circumcised are circucised because their mother wanted them to be circumcised within three days of being born, the few who get circucised later in life are usually in their teens, to wait until age 22 is just odd. Maybe his wife wanted him to get circumcised?

There are conditions where the foreskin binds in such a way as to prevent intercourse. Legend has it that such was the case with Peter III of Russia, the husband and victim of Catherine the Great. He was unable to consummate the marriage to produce an heir and was too terrified of surgery to have the circumcision to fix the problem. When Catherine became pregnant with her lover Orloff (though some rumors credited fatherhood to the English ambassador), and Peter hadn't consummated the marriage, a plot was hatched and he was gotten passed out drunk and the circumcision was performed. When he woke up they told him he had done the deed. Shortly afterwards he was overthrown and assassinated by Catherine or her allies.
