Marvel's The Avengers

Just came back from this flick, and boy was I impressed.

This is a pure campy schlock superhero movie. What was nice was that we have already had the creation stories for this movie told to us through;

2 Hulk Movies

2 Iron Man Movies

1 Captain America Movie

1 Thor Movie

We've also seen the supporting characters show up in those earlier films. Everyone of importance was already introduced, and established, so we got to go right to the meat and potatoes of the story, without rehashing the creation and back-stories. I would have said that having the creation stories in other movies would hurt this one, but not so. Even if you haven't seen the other films, you can still enjoy this movie for the romp it is.

You will need to know a small something of the characters though. You need to know what the Hulk is, you need to know that Thor and Loki are immortals from another world, and you need to know that Captain America was from the 1940's, was frozen until the present, and is trying to fit in again. Tony Stark/Iron-man is pretty self explanatory in this film.

The characters are well known enough to not suffer too much from any lack of attention in this film.

Joss Whedon returns to doing what he does best. He is best when writing for an ensemble. And he is best at writing memorable dialogue. He is in near perfect form in this movie. I was greatly reminded of his other work. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and Serenity. Whedon knows how to handle groups of characters with interesting traits, without overshadowing anyone.

Every superhero gets their moment to shine in this movie. There are absolutely iconic moments stolen directly from the comic books, and on display in all their glory.

Growing up, I was never interested in The Avengers. The only one of the bunch I liked was the Hulk. Iron Man wasn't drawn well enough. Thor just looked too campy, and as a Canadian, I wasn't interested in Captain America. This movie made me like ALL of the heroes. I even enjoyed how they fit together, and eventually worked as a team.

This movie will never win any awards, but it will entertain the masses who go to see it.

As said before, be sure to stay right to the very end of the last of the credits. It is a must. It is a moment I am still laughing over.

Above all, I think of this movie as a pure Action/Comedy. It is in a different league from a movie like The Dark Knight, which is an Action/Drama. They will appeal to different audiences. People looking for a good time, should check out The Avengers. So far, it is my favorite movie of 2012. It sets the bar very high for any others that follow.

Even though I'm more of a DC comics fan, I'll still take my son to see it.

What did you think of his series Dollhouse ?

Though I enjoyed it, I didn't enjoy it as much as his other work. It wasn't his best offering. Mainly because he wasn't writing for an ensemble cast. He was writing for Eliza Dushku. In all his other work, it was the team that was interesting.

You had the Scooby Gang in Buffy.

Angel Investigations in Angel.

The Crew in Firefly.

Dollhouse never formed a cohesive group to tell the stories.

Avengers is a group story, and that is what Joss is good at.

I recognise some of the characters when I was growing up on Marvel comics like Cap, Thor, Ironman etc, but I recollect there being Wasp and Antman too. And if I remember correctly Hawkeye was a baddie turned goodie.

So come on Dave! Give us the lowdown on the movie:D

I finally saw it on PPV and its lots of fun.

Car chases and crashes before the title, all sorts of action, the fight scenes are nice and it has that really run sense of humor not to take itself too seriously...

I'll watch it again tomorrow.

I Watched it the third time on that rental (3 days, not bad)

Quite solidly made and executed. Not everyone is good or bad and yet there is an absolute evil.

Tony Stark's wise ass style and remarks set a good tone for enjoying the movie but THE HULK gets the best lines.
