Insomnia, A State of Consciousness
I have always had sleep problems and required more then the standard hours of sleep though out my life. When I do not get it, I drop. Not really, I get a warning and go prone.
I can get as intoxicated as hell on sleepers and not a <yawn>
The dairy black out doesn't help.
I get tired, try to sleep but, the sleep switch does not switch and after an hour
have to get up and move.
The last three days I have done some heavy walking so it ain't the lack of exercise because I
moved more then I have forever.
I know a bowl of cereal and milk works or maybe a bowl of mashed potatoes and gravy.
That is a heavy caloric price for blissful carriage in the arm of Morpheus, or is it Soma I seek?
Suggestions?
BTW usually happens full moon time and pending Santa Ana Winds. Least with rain and fog.

I wonder if bilateral orchiectomy helps wmany people with insomnia. Probably people who wish they had a sexual partner but do not.

I've only slept 5 hours in the last two days, so you'll get no answers from me. What does help is a regular bed time, which I never seem able to maintain. I'd been going to sleep at 10 AM, so yesterday I stayed up until 6:30 PM, thinking to adjust. But then I could sleep only a little, and wound up all night anyway. I've been up now since midnight. I read that people like me are prone to heart attacks, strokes, etc. Cheers!

I have guaranteed sleep issues when working above 12,000 feet. Here are some of the tricks I have learned. Keep a lit candle where you can see it. One glass of wine before bedtime. Aspirin before bedtime. Melatonin before bedtime.
I don't know any would help lowlanders living in civilized Oregon, but those are what helped me in the Altiplano.

I go to sleep listening to a book on my iPod, generally listening to the same book each night, setting my iPod to go off after about 30 minutes. When I wake up during the night, as I always do, I turn my iPod back on for another 30 minutes. Probably want to pick an audiobook read in a monotone to lull you to sleep.

I take 1 mg of melatonin at bedtime. I know many people take more. How much do you use?

After doing all the tricks, I gave in to a cup of b'fast cereal and milk.
It worked, but a bad idea.
Wish a real sleeping pill like Seconal barbiturate was still a available.
For me it is like the sleep switch won't switch. I lay there tired until I can't anymore.
Then get up and move around.
Repeat through the night.

No matter what I do, I end up awake at night. Every four or five days I have to stay up 24 hours to get back on track because my schedule slips about 2 hours a day. Two hours later every day until I get to the point I am going to bed at 10 am and waking up at 6 pm. Then I stay up all day and get super sleepy by 9 pm, sleep till 3 am and the whole thing starts over.

Exactly. And narcotic drugs do not help. I can take Halcyon to staggering and not a yawn.
BUT, sometimes the restless legs drug that is available in generic seems to work if I plan for it.
Chew the tablets. Go to bed about 45 minutes late.
Ropinirole 0.5 mg start with one, up to two. If you take it too late, you will have a hangover, like benedryl.
If I decide to use it, I would take it half past Jon Stewart The Daily Show and turn off the lights after Colbert.
I did use it last night but, at a frustrating 2AM. It worked but, . . .
I wish.
Military discipline like scheduling does not work. Life long sleep cycle problems.
