Re: does your internet provider jack the price every 6 months
I wish it was that cheap.
Between the HD TV in one room, a regular TV in the other, ENCORE, STARZ and HBO, and the modem on my computer
$175 a month
I do get over 100 HD channels and all of ON DEMAND which is a good service. Most shows I can miss on first run and catch later on "ON DEMAND".
The computer modem is lightning fast. I've watched TV shows that don't repeat "ON DEMAND" on cable and that works for me.
However, Comcast is overpriced thanks to (guess what) corporate lobbyists paying off politicians.

I don't have tv or telephone service, this is just internet. My son is visiting and he is with comcast now getting me a different service, I am ready to tell them to go screw themselves, I don't like any company that keeps jacking there prices every 6 months, time to find someone else. BTW when I cut someone loose like this I never ever use them again, ever. I don't give a damn what they offer.

Hmm, it is cheaper here. For 20$/month I get 25mbit/s + "white" ip address (static), reachable from internet, no NAT.
TV channels go as a "free, but we do not guarantee anything". I do not remember prices going up for a long time.
When you have more than one provider competing for the user and market is more or less saturated,
they tend to drop prices as much as is economically feasible.
After going through two stages of course:
first one is cutting the cables of other providers, and second is price dumping.

Re: does your internet provider jack the price every 6 months
Comcast offers special offers of reduced prices, usually for six months or a year, after which the price rises hugely. So every time the price goes up I call them up and talk about switching to another provider and they offer me the introductory price for another six months or a year. I've been doing that for ten years. Currently I pay about $120 for cable, internet , and phone w/ free long distance. They throw in Encore free, but I pass on the rest of the premium channels. I would drop the landline phone, but my elderly parents are hard of hearing and Comcast phone has much better fidelity than my cell phone.

We tried the same thing but I only get the internet so they did not want to deal, I have made my decision and will go with the new cable company that laid fiber optics in last fall. The start up will be a chunk and it will take 6 months to break even but then I will be money ahead. They are part of an Obama program so the price is fixed.
Comcast can go to hell.

I pay Comcast (as a cable company) $0.00. Yes, you read that right, NOTHING. I watch TV via my off-air antenna and a converter box. The signal is better than I ever got from cable.
The internet is my big expense of all those types of bills, running about $30 per month.
I've never understood why people pay $175 per month for the "utility", there is no reason for it. They get you hooked on the crap TV they offer and make you think you need it. I threw 'em out of my life about 4 years ago, and while it took me a while to go through the TV withdrawals, since then I've not missed it at all.
My advice, buy a TV antenna, converter box (if you need it) for about $100 for both and tell Comcast to stuff it. Then get a basic internet provider. I think a $100 one-time expenditure is better than $150 per month.

Re: does your internet provider jack the price every 6 months
For internet only, a price over $70 is outrageous. I get DSL from Verizon for about $30. Of course, DSL isn't as fast as what you get from cable, but 2-3 Mbps does everything I want at good speed. I can download a full movie in about 25 minutes. Web pages appear instantly. If I thought cable would make my life better, I'd get it, but at a certain point, the benefits of ever higher speed begin to vanish.

Re: does your internet provider jack the price every 6 months
my internet access has been the same price for 10 years...it was locked in when i signed the contract
i pay 24.95 a month...the antenna was a one time charge of 300 $
my backup dsl costs me 38 $ a month with phone line
i have 2 places i watch all cable tv and movies commercial free so i have no need for cable
no cable in the country anyway and the dsl runs on repeaters to get it this far out
fortunately the stock broker with the house on top of the mountain down the road paid for the repeaters

Those would be great options except for one thing, if you play RPG (role playing games) like wow you must have faster internet speeds.
