start with estrogen, spiro, or both?

Post by transistor (imported) »

I'm going to begin a low dose trial of hormones to see if I like how I feel before starting the full transition process. What I'm wondering is if I should try the estrogen (Estrofem) for a week or two before starting Spiro, or should I only take Spiro for a little while to see how I feel without T, or should I just start on both at the same time?

So long as you ramp up the dosages gradually, it probably doesn't matter much. Most common is to start the two together. I see little to be gained by starting one before the other. Some trans porn actresses take estrogen w/out blockers in the belief that T-blockers are more responsible for impotence and shrinkage than estrogen. Just remember to rush slowly. Sudden hormone changes can cause insanity. Sort of PMS on steroids.

Transward provides good advice based on experience and knowledge. Both spiro and estrogen will lower your testosterone levels, and this lowering alone can change your outlook drastically. The main thing (like Transward said) is to take it slowly. Starting with a low dose for several weeks (months, even) and then slowly increasing it. Good luck!

hmm, I think it depends if you are on medical supervision or not. If not, it may be useful to go one at a time, primarily in case you run into side effects. I'd go spiro first, since it's the less "natural" drug, and you can make sure that it really is taking all the T out of your body: you should feel a lethargic before you add estrogen. Don't do it for as long as me though, unless you want to worry about osteoperosis, etc.

Also, I've found that the ostradiol gel (http://www.inhousepharmacy.biz/p-297-oestrogel.aspx) works pretty well. Friends in the transgender community tell me there is really no danger of taking oral estrogen (it is processed by the liver), but I figure might as well take the lowest risk drug ... hopefully I'll also be able to crank up the dosage when/if I feel ready.
