American eunuchs, documentary 2003

Post by baldwin92 (imported) »

I was googling and came across this movie (released on DVD in 2006). It is available on Amazon. Has any one seen it? There is a thread on here that mentions a documentary on British TV, don't know if it is the same movie. This movie's trailer has an interview with Dr Spector and some eunuchs plus a interview with a cutter. Does anyone think it is worth a purchase?

No! I was given a copy free and that was too much. I am glad I watched it but do not feel it represented our community in a positive light. The British documentary with two of our members was of higher quality. Many of the articles and videos are rather exploitive and sensationalized.

American Eunuchs is one of the films listed in the Bibliography (http://www.eunuch.org/forums/showthread ... bliography) on the Non-Fiction Articles board. The link leads to a very long set of negative comments about it.

American Eunuchs (2003)

A very exploitative documentary. Shows both Dr. Felix Spector and “Gelding” on screen. See the comments of Archive members at

http://www.eunuch.org/forums/showthread ... an+Eunuchs

A much better documentary, also listed in the Bibiliography is

Eunuchs (2007)

A very good documentary with sympathetic portrayals of the individuals involved. Produced for television Channel 4 in the UK and not yet broadcast in the U.S. or Canada. Both Homptydumpty and Thefraj, who were formerly quite active on the Archive, figure prominently in this documentary. See comments at

American Eunuchs (2003)

Eunuchs (2007)

Both are hack pieces as far as I'm concerned. American Eunuchs is worse than Eunuchs, but both amounted to nothing more than "look at the freaks..."

I wouldn't waste my time with either. A representative from Eunuchs came to me and pressured me to go on video using the statement "Nobody ouside of the UK and Europe will ever see it...." But I knew better. Less than 6-months after airing in Europe it played on cable TV in the US.

Both of the companies that produced these two pieces of filth lied and lied often to our community. I would hope others here wouldn't reward that behavior. That said, I'm surprised you had not heard of either of these before, they've been mentioned on the EA often enough. ;)

I didn't see the 2007 one, but I saw the "American Eunuchs" one at a small screening where one of the Italian filmmakers was present. It was all presented as a total sideshow freak show. After the screening, I asked the filmmaker whether there was a eunuch community in Italy and he laughed in my face, both because the idea of such a community in Italy was ludicrous and because he assumed I was a freakish eunuch.

My guess is that if you want a film sympathetic to eunuchs then it'll have to be made by eunuchs.

I briefly ran my own video production company. I went through film school. I have been a part of a few documentaries. One an expose type thing on the condition of senior care and the other on nude modelling and models.

In both cases, I agreed to be a part of it because there was a personal journey taking place. A student struggling with bills, and looking to earn some more money by posing as an artist's model, a family exploring the best place to house their aging mother.

Good documentaries are a personal journey. They should be told or explored by someone who has something invested in the project. Neither eunuch documentary was such a documentary. They were both about looking at freaks. There was no personal sensitivity.

Maybe one day, I'll even try to film something personal myself. I think if there were a project that could inspire me to do a documentary, the eunuch lifestyle might be it. Like was already said in this thread, it would have to be told from the eunuch perspective for it to be a valid and compelling story. Outsiders can't really get what is important. They'll focus on the oddity of wanting to end sexuality, rather than what makes us who we are.

Our story is worth telling, but it certainly hasn't been told yet.
