Ohh I do know about the Alamo. The great military tradition of taking a major defeat and turning it into something to be celebrated. The Brits have their Rorke's Drift, the French have their Camarón, and Texans have the Alamo. ^^

I can't honestly tell you why it's named "The Salt Lick", but I can say it's highly recommended by people (http://www.saltlickbbq.com/pages/Press.html) (including chefs) from all around the US. I've considered making a very long (almost 20 hours) road trip simply to visit them. There is a large open-pit wood-fired grill in the dining area where everything is cooked, and the delicious smell of smoke wafts throughout the restaurant. I absolutely love to cook this way, and I could probably stay there to watch them work that pit most of the day.

I went on the Al Capone tour in Chicago today. Saw the theatre John Dilinger got gunned down at, saw the site where the St Valentine's day massacre happened, saw their old stomping grounds and the lot.

Also went shopping in Macy's in Chicago today. When packing for this trip I sort of realised I had an incredible bra-panty mismatch. I have like... maybe 1 bra for 10 panties, so I've just evened the numbers up some. Also got myself a nice swimsuit. Hotel in texas has an indoor pool and I'm gonna use it.

Forget the Alamo, it is so much Disney. Just be properly reverent about it.

Also to remember was the disaster of Goliad. Commanded by the only West Point graduate involved in the Texas war of Independence. Remember Texas was an independent nation for some ten years.

Just to really know, study up on the Battle of San Jacinto described as

America's shortest bloodiest most decisive military victory. Problem is it was Texan, not American.

A naturally occuring "salt lick" is just an area of salty soil where animals go to lick the ground for salt.

The "Salt Lick BBQ" south of Austin may be built near such a geologic feature.

It is particularly fun on Sunday's when they have BBQ beef ribs. I think it seats around 1000 and there

is often a 1-2 hour wait.

Central Texas is the nirvana of Texas BBQ. Other great places would certainly include Louie Muellers in

Taylor, just north of Austin. And any of these

A "salt lick" can also be just a block of salt set out for cows or other animals.

While in Austin go to "Central Market", a great grocery store.

You can skinny dip at "Hippy Hollow" if there's water, or wear your suit to Barton Springs.
