Dogs

Post by Riverwind (imported) »

Why dogs because we have one on cats, and some of us have both.

I was reading a story in fanfiction by one of our members and there was a reference to a little wolf going through a kitchen and getting a dog biscuit. This got me to thinking so I looked up dog biscuits on line, and found about a hundred different recipes. Some had garlic, why would you want to give your dog garlic is beyond me. Finally I came across one that sounded about right, whole wheat, butter, egg, powdered milk water, a little salt. So I wiped up a batch, cut them in little squares, and mostly wondered if Nelly would like them, OMG, she thinks these are better then the rawhide treats she gets. She loves them, this is so cool as they cost about a buck a pound which if you buy treats for your cat or dog at the store its closer to 10 to 15 bucks a pound.

Right now its close to 1AM and Nelly is in her basket, Rupert is in her basket, Nelly has one leg over Rupert.

You know as much as cats and dogs are so totally different when you live with both they learn to not only get along but in a way love each other.

I worked with a guy who had both a dog and cat. They would be snuggled up together on the couch and he would say, "Get the cat." The dog would jump up growling and snarling and race to the window to look outside. When it finally dawned on him that there was nothing outside, he would back down from the window and wander back to the couch to snuggle some more with the family cat.

It is amazing how some unlikely animals pair up.

I want an orangatang and a dog when I grow up.

I have an indoor beagle, and an outdoor Belgian shepherd. (Think - black collie). Grandpa has an outdoor mutt, which I intend to butcher and stuff into the crock pot someday! I still regret not getting that huge black/gray wolf-hybrid-looking monster-dog from the shelter that everyone was afraid of. But no, we had to get that hound-mix medium sized bark-box kick-dog he picked out.

As for garlic in dog treats? No. It's easy to Google "foods toxic to dogs." Onions and garlic are two of them, but getting a dog to eat enough of them to kill him isn't going to happen.

I get dog treats called Nunn Better made in Evansville, IN, and others by the same maker from Pet Food Center. Huge bone-shaped cookies. My little 'grandson' has also decided that he likes dog biscuits. His mom tells me he's partial to the red ones.

The beagle grew up with a nasty old yellow tom cat for his best friend, so he's got no problem with cats. The Belgian, on the other hands, considers cats a light snack before dinner.

My dog (look left) is the greatest addition to my life since castration and my love of wine. He is always glad to see me at the end of the work day. He smiles and loves to meet other people and dogs. When I first adopted him I thought I would have someone to hold when I was sad. Oddly since he has entered my life I am rarely sad. Hell I walk him 3 times a day and work 8 hours so when would I have time to dwell in the past. Corky keeps me active and I am learning to be happy with dog hair everywhere.

Unfortunately, one week ago today the old guy here suffered what we believe to be a stroke, with a massive seizure as well. After, he was unable to walk, or even stand without falling over, confusion, personality changes, and so on.

He passed two days later. We'd felt for awhile that this would be his last Christmas, since is was over 18 and had been in failing health for some time, but we'd hoped that he would manage to hang on at least that long. Sadly, that wasn't to be.

Panda will be deeply missed.

To ieunuch, so sorry for your loss. Even when they are old, we still love them.

My own furry child is a black mouth cur. For those who are uninitiated , think Old Yeller of Disney movie fame. She is truly my heart and soul, and in many ways is more human than most people I know.

Her nature is such that she is very very attached to "Daddy", and does not like other humans to touch me. I know I'll get flack for this, but she is so much a part of the household that she eats whatever I do for dinner. That could be anything from steak to salmon to Crabcakes, depending on the day. She remains rail thin, and has more energy than most dogs half her age, which will be 6 February 13th.

She has learned nearly 100 words, and names, so when a friend is coming, I need only say that Uncle or Aunt so and so is coming, and she is instantly poised for their arrival.

When my ex was in the process of making my life hell both before and after his departure, she was my solace. Her warm and loving attention to me was what made those dark days bearable. Given the choice she prefers to sleep next to me, head on the pillow, and in cold weather snuggled under the covers. When denied that privledge cause the B/F wants a dog free night, she goes in the guest room ,and pulls back the covers, and then pulls them up around herself. She really looks like someone has tucked her in.

She is a blessing, and I miss her as much during the day as she does me. That joyous greeting I get , and her sigh of contentment when I come back in the door is worth more than all the gold at Ft Knox.

Yes, I know , I am another crazy dog person, but who cares, makes both of us happy !

IE I am very sorry for your loss. Now that I have bonded with my dog I cannot imagine being without him. Your dog must have had a good life and lots of love to stick around for 18 years.

Raymar I love opening the door and seeing him as excited to see me as I am to see him. I also miss him through the day. I am so glad he likes everyone and has no groups he dislikes. Even the mailman likes him. Corky usually sleeps with me unless he falls asleep in one bed and I sleep in another.

Some people think that garlic repels fleas.
