As noted in the news article , this is a very special case with little application for a generalized treatment. The bone marrow transplant carries a much higher risk of death than continued treatment of HIV with standard retro-viral medications. Cure research will probably follow advances in retro-viral therapies, not such exotic treatment... but who knows?

As I recall the 'secret' is a missing protein on the CD4 cell membrane that makes it impossible for the HIV virus to connect to the cell membrane.

As you may know, the HIV virus and the black plague were initially connected for their similar infection mechanisms, however, another theory claims the plague epidemic in the 12th - 13th century was caused by a virus, not a bacterium.
