The Tree of Life - movie

For starters, it's not a "Brad Pitt movie." It's also not a "Sean Penn movie," even though they are both in it.

This is a movie that can only be appreciated by those that understand imagery, and appreciate filming technique with metaphor in the subject matter.

The story is sort of disjointed, but details one boy's life growing up under a very strict, if not bipolar, father. (Pitt). At the beginning of the movie, it seems that this boy died at age 19 (war?) and is sort of a flashback - but we're not really sure if the younger brother (Penn, adult) is the one flashing back or not.

Not very many kind reviews have been posted about this movie, as it's not the typical American cinema fare. There's no sex, a little violence, and no nudity other than boys without shirts or shoes.

What is great about it is that it is relaxing, other than the scenes where Pitt's father-character is being an asshole.

The ending, which seems to be an attempt at filming either the end of life (the little brother, grown up?) or the end of the world is unclear, but very well done.

For those with an evening to waste who would like to study it, I'd recommend this movie on a larger TV with good color. The music gets loud and annoying at times, and the dialog can be hard to hear, but it is a thought-provoking treat if you're into that kind of thing.

I liked it quite a bit. If you enjoyed it, you might like "I Am Love" with Ms. Tilda Swinton. Same kind of vibe.

I thought that the end of the film might have something to do with evolution, but explored in a metaphorical space. All these people on the beach, unsure whether they should return to the water.
