laptop problems

Post by weestub (imported) »

I've had an HP laptop that came with a Credential Manager for years. I've never used the Credential Manager and have forgotten my password for it. A few days ago I began getting pop-ups every time I tried to "save" or "save as" a Word document. Since I can't log onto the Credential Manager, I'm unable to save any Word files I write. I know this isn't a eunuch problem, but in anyone has a solution I'd be grateful.

weestub,

Check this out: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... 90a70a7871

Not sure if that'll solve your problem, but it's a start; keep your fingers crossed... :)

I think you've got a virus here. Try cleaning it with your anti-virus software or any security suite

Has your issue been resolved?

If not, what version of Word/Office are you using? What OS are you running? Windows 98? Windows XP? Vista? Since you said "years", it sounds like an older machine and OS. What do the popups say? For example what does the "title" line of the box say, what is the exact text of the message in the message box including all numbers and punctuation, and what are the labels on the buttons presented to you?

Have you tried Malwarebytes, trial version? 14 day full function. It gets a LOT of stuff out.

I agree, this sounds viral or malware-ish.

Have you ran Microsoft Update recently? It is possible this is a bug in Word, and one of the updates would fix it. Remember you need to run Microsoft Update over and over again (until there are no updates left) because often there are "updates to updates".

At the very least go to Microsoft's website and search for a Service Pack for the version of Office (Word) that you are using. The Service Packs contain many updates all rolled into one big file.

("Microsoft Update" is Windows Update with the "search for updates to additional Microsoft products" box checkmarked in Win7/Vista. Or the "Get Microsoft Update" link clicked on the Windows Update website in Windows XP. "Windows Update" gets updates only for Windows. "Microsoft Update" gets updates for both Windows and any other Microsoft products you have, including Office/Word).

If the laptop came with a disk, I'd move all my important files off to removable media and just wipe it out. Word isn't that hard to come by, if you know where to look. I've even seen the CD's at yard sales.

I haven't logged in for a while. Gosh, thanks to everyone who wrote in with a suggestion! The problem persists and stumps a couple colleagues who maintain our work computers as well, but I've found I can get around it by opening an existing Word file and typing there. These can be saved and then manually transferred to a memory stick or sent via email if necessary. Perhaps it's time for a new machine anyway.

Since it hasn't yet been mentioned, I'll note that it's possible to download a new version of the HP Credential Manager, and when installing it click the box to have the old one removed. This might at least be useful information for anyone else who has forgotten their Credential Manager password.
