Earthquake drills...
Reminiscent of the Atomic Attack drills...
You know, quick, dive under your desk, put your head between your legs and...
...KISS YOUR ASS GOODBYE!

First one was:
In case of nuclear attack, take a white bed sheet, lie down cover yourself in it and..... sloooowly crawl to the cemetary.
-Why slowly?
-So to not create panic.
The second one:
In case of nuclear attack, you need to lie down facing from the explosion, and put your rifle nearby. Why putting the rifle? So that melting bayonet would not drip on your issued boots.

Thanks, I needed that.
It is always wonderful to get another view of the same subject and you do it so nicely, it always brings a smile.

Re: The Eastern Earthquake
Not this past January, but January of 2010 when the 24 inches of snow hit forcing me out of my house, a neighbor told me that he watched the electric crew go to every electric pole and fix the wires. They did it one at a time and power came back on one house at a time.
Think of what hurricane Irene is going to do to electric lines and how much time it will take to repair the lines.
You have to plan for the worst and hope that Hurricane Irene blows out to sea.

Come on Dave, Electricity is over rated, up until a 150 years ago we did not have electricity and the world got along just fine the same could be said for flush toilets. As a boss once said, is it a must have or a nice to have and lets face it its at best a nice to have.

RiverOverrated?
In rural conditions - may be.
In the city - no elevators, no water, no electric stoves, sometimes no heating. Paralyzed public transit systems (trams and subway). Loss of communications in about 48 hours or so, both for cell phones and landline.
Modern city without electricity is unfit for living.

Re: The Eastern Earthquake
In paradise our utilities are underground.
The same money I could have installed a photo voltaic unit on the roof was used for a Natural Gas Electricity generator, automatic and connected to the house gas. I can't ever remember a natural gas outage.
A problem with the photovoltaic is if "the grid" is down, even for a rolling black out, you are down too. You are dependent on the grid to convert your DC to AC , etc.
I believe in using as much infrastructure as I can afford because conservation is rewarded with more customers sucking off the same tit.
Dave, can you connect a generator to your heating oil reservoir?

Re: The Eastern Earthquake
I do understand that in a few days the entire east coast will be without power, and here I live in an all electric house, OH MY. I hate electric stoves and this is just one more reason to have a gas range. I guess its time to break out the candles and storm lanterns, wait, I don't need to do that I live here in the mid west, I never understood that, mid west, Ohio is in the mid west. If you look at a map it should be called the mid east, but we already have one of those.
I have not seen the entire evening news devoted to one subject, the weather. I will say this that FEMA and the president yes that DEMOCRAT has already been working on the problems that may and most likely will arise. Unlike that other president that flew over New Orleans and said "the most important thing I need to do is nominate a new supreme court judge". Go figure.
Actually this could put the president in the drivers seat for next year if the government response quickly but look for republicans in the house to drag their feet.
