Forty years ago, when I moved to this neighborhood, you would have seen an American flag flying from every porch on June 14th. I went out to bring in the trash cans a little while ago and looked up and down the block. It was saddening to see that my flag was the only one visible.
We'll see what happens on the Fourth of July.

Re: Flag Day
Flag Day came and went without acknowledgement in my "O.C." neighborhood where 20-30% of the homes display the flag everyday!
Big ones, on poles, lite at night to be "legal" and be lazy about their flag flying.
Maybe it gets to be desensitizing to see broad strips and bright stars too frequently?
Or the feeling of duplicate holidays;
like Veterans Day and Memorial Day?

Re: Flag Day
I think its because my flag was hijacked, let me explain. It all started one morning in September, after 911 the Bush and the republicans made me feel that if I raised my flag I would be saying I was a republican because only republicans wave there flag, not the trader democrats as spoken by Cheney, they sang America at every base ball game, everywhere you turned the flag was in your face.
My flag is special, it is not like any flag in the world, each and everything on that flag represents this country all of it and ALL of its people.
In years past my troop would go to the local cemetery and put flags on any grave that showed a rank of service, today Memorial weekend I spend alone, and reflect on what could have been.
Before 911 I would stand when they played the national anthem today I turn the sound off and ignore it.
I am still and always have been a flag waver, and I will do so again when the people of this country realize that MY Flag belongs to ALL of us, from the far right to the far left, not just the far right. When the tea party and those types of people realize that I am not the enemy, that I am an American I will again show my colors. Until then it will stay folded properly in my dresser and the sound on my TV will remain silent.

Re: Flag Day
I think it was the WW2 generation who flew flags, posted them on graves for Veteran's and Memorial Day, and displayed them in their yards.

Re: Flag Day
Dave, I was born after WWII, up until 10 years ago I put flags on graves so did my scouts, teaching the next generation to respect our past.
