Actually I am learning Linux, my friend and neibour is an IT guy and uses several flavors where he works. He is the one that recommended Debian over Ubuntu which I also like. I do know I am loving how it works and as I get deeper into it. The best thing about it is that its not Microshaft.

my future career in the field of computer engineering will greatly reqire me to write low level code.C, C++(a good forefront), and nothing but the different variants of assembly to interact at the hardware level of things.

I want to create a sweet embedded device using Linux as it's main OS.I see a future for Linux bc you can do anything with the Linux kernel.It's extremely inter-operable and highly modular.

PS = do not mention JAVA around me, language is garbage, slow, inefficient to code for and poop.

I've played with both Puppy and Ubuntu. I would dump Windows if I could get a printer driver for Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I haven't found one yet, and I'm not ambitious enough to create my own.

The only reason experienced PC users keep windoze around is for the games.

Steam is too addicting but honestly with my 6 course load in college it only serves as a distraction.

I'd say i've fully made the transition.

Give Porteus-Linux a try.If that doesn't work just wait it.Newer kernels are emerging and really man windows 7 and windows 8 are starting to feel it's age.

Take for example filesystems.Windows still uses the antiquated NTFS.

A new improved NTFS version 6 is what they got for now.But really we still have to defragment our harddrives?

Opensource has been neglected by private-code for years.

That is my biggest complaint, to use Linux no matter what flavor you need to know command line commands. It still does not connect well with other things, don't misunderstand me, I like Linux but its like connecting my printer to it, I get an error, so I looked it up, its a known error that will be fixed sometime ? but it leaves me without a printer. Windows is no better on my printer problem as there are no drivers for Windows 7 64 bit systems and my printer. However packaged software works on windows out of the box, this is not always true with a linux box there is still a long way to go.

As for NTSF, I have 200 G of space on my linus box formated for NTSF.

filesystem design,Swap is asigned to its own partition;

In essence filesystems in linux are lightyears ahead compared to windows's outdated NTFS.

Redhat is switching over to "BTRFS" and when newer linux kernels come out, btrfs is supposedly gonna smoke EXT4 performance -wise

As for interoperability with windows.It's kinda hard for poor old linux.

Reason is cuz Ms closes their source code and often inorder to make things work you have to either wrap windows code in a wrapper and place in an windows abstraction layer(dll and system files reversed engineered on linux; If you use "wine" you'll get what I mean) and this is limited

OR..... fully emulate an operating system on Linux; which I prefer not to use virtualization.It's intense resource hog!!!!! to do so.

There is no doubt problems in Linux and I feel your pain river.

I find opensource developers could fix all issues but frankly linux is opensource.

Problem being anyone can contribute to the code.

And quite often there is no standard to conform to when developing software for linux.

THE concept of "free" development is sporadic and you could somehow say its everywhere.And since there's no standard to conform to when coding quite often things can be left unfinished, incomplete, lacking substance etc.....

Since no one can agree to 1 thing we have a multitude of distro's hehe.......

It's either a good or bad thing I suppose.

it's a pain to make up one's mind to choose for noobs and novice users.

hehe......It's also painful for the expirienced.

I still can't find my distro of choice.

But that maybe bc it's fun to be optimistic to find the impossible.

With windows there's less soft for 64-bit systems, drivers are bloated(cmon......

printer drivers are loaded with crap.And if you ever uninstall one app tied with the printer drivers it may erase a shared .dll file from the windows registry LOLZ), and OEM signed specific vendor drivers become hard to find online if yer hardware is out of date(very true for laptops that age with time)
