3 month check up, T levels up.

Post by hoosierdad (imported) »

Just wanted to keep everyone updated on my journey. Had my 3 month checkup with my doc last week and had blood work done. I have been taking 50mg of Androcur daily since Jan 20th. (started out on 100mg daily for 20 days) The current blood tests show my T levels at 300. This is down from the 750 I started at but up considerably from 60 after month one. (Normal ranges per my doc are 200-800.) I have had the feeling that my T levels were up but hoped they were lower than 300.

The wife and I have had a few fights lately about intimacy and I told my doc I want to go up to 100 mg per day to see if I can get my T levels down further. He was not too thrilled but said as long as my body can tolerate it, he will back me. So far all of my other blood tests have shown the Androcur is not affecting my liver and all other blood tests are good. The wife and I had a long talk last night and I asked her on a scale of 1 to 10 where would she like my libido to be. She thought about it and we talked more and she finally said ZERO. I was a bit taken back by this but I can totally understand her point on the topic. She has practically no interest in sex and intercourse is physically painful for her so she has no use for an erect penis. I am hoping I can get my Libido under control with the higher dose but am concerned that Androcur alone will not do it.

I will have another check up in July so here's hoping 100mg of Androcur will kill off my libido and not kill off me.

I know that not many men can understand why I am doing this but I dearly love my wife and we have 2 great boys ages 6 and 8. If I can't get my libido under control I am afraid our marriage is doomed and divorce is simply not an option. We are a great team, we have lots of fun together and I believe that I can live a sexless life and still be very happy.

Thanks again for all the support this group gives me I really like to be able to vent and get feedback from others like myself.

Later, Hoosierdad.

I think if the truth be known, many wives would have their spouse's libido at zero if they could. When I told mine recently that my libido was still pretty low after stopping the androcur last year (and following up with alcohol injections that she doesn't know about), she replied, "That's good". Like your wife, mine has just about

Androcur is only meant to supply temporary relief, however. At some point, you'll have to decided if low libido is something that you want to continue and make permanent.

hoosierdad, the only time cyproterone dosages caused problems were when taken at levels of 300 mg/day and higher, for very serious cases of prostate cancer. It is doubtful (especially since you've already done it and had your blood tested) that 100 mg/day will cause you any problems. I'm hoping it lowers your T to acceptable levels (or lower!) and keeps the peace in your marriage.

Hoosierdad, thank you for checking in and giving an update. Great to hear from you!

For all the guys posting here whose wives find intercourse painful, a recent study indicated that 1/3 of all women find intercourse painful.

Follow this link to a health blog on WBUR, the main NPR station in Boston, for the first of two postings about "pelvic floor massage" and how it addressed the source of the pain the blogger was experiencing during intercourse. I figured if this form of Physical Therapy was uncommon enough for Mass General Hospital to made a big deal about it in Great Rounds, it would be worth mentioning here.

On the other hand, some gals (e.g., my wife) seem to enjoy sex enough once there's been enough foreplay and cuddling and emotional bonding, but just can't get over the hurdle of letting anything start.

But for whatever it's worth, I thought I should pass along this somatic solution to what seems to be a real somatic pain problem for a good number of women.

On a different note, I am curious about whether it is possible to keep up modest doses of Androcur basically indefinitely without causing a complete shutdown of natural production of T. (An old college friend recently mentioned he had been taking steroids for body building and when it caused a blood problem and he went off cold turkey, he found his body had already completely stopped native production of T, which led to months of exhaustion and depression while he waited for native production to resume.)

Interesting that the medical / pharmaceutical complex is so good about pushing drugs for ED, but apparently uninterested in the mismatch of male and female libidos.
