Glad you are making a move, but does this mean you won't have any more wild stories to tell us ? I hope this new place is much warmer and cheaper for you to live in, too.

In regards to paying the $50 a day,, you could tell her that you could have been witholding the rent money for the past year because of the bad conditions she did not fix (not sure if you can do that in your state),, but it is a renter's right to have a safe , workable home here in Ohio. You could have called building inspectors' on her, as well as health code people, and she could have really had to pay out some money, plus have to "bow"to people, which she obviously doesn't do,, so that would be very hard for her. Hopefully these ideas might make it more plausible to get back most of your deposit money. I also like the idea mentioned about you could have told her to start eviction proceedings... Landlords hate those words.

Check with your local government about guidelines for landlords and the rights of tenants. Hopefully you have some printed proof that you can use to reinforce your logical arguments.
