Armageddon (not the movie)
The accurate Mayan calender ends Dec 21, 2012.
The end of earth and life as we know it, or perhaps after the last calender maker died nobody wanted to continue on with the boring job.
An armageddon, of sorts, is undoubtedly already here.
Food shortages, starvation, environmental ruin, all a result of overpopulation.
And it continues.
As the planet's resources are consumed, and the population continues to grow, one can only hope, in the face of all evidence, that the human race will not self destruct.
Or a new disease might evolve that will decimate, even eliminate.
Always a chance of a giant meteor hitting earth, nearly wiping out all life, resetting the clock, so the earth can start the life cycle over again as it has done so many times in the past.
Humans might just be nature's deviant accident. A complex brain housed in a body driven by animal instincts. Reproduction, survival of the species, survival and dominance by the individual, are so strong that many people submit to them instead of living a live of mental control guided by intelligence.
Our human bodies still carry in them the instincts and hormones of our beastly past; they have not evolved and adapted to a body that contains a developed brain and mind. And so much horror seems to be driven by male testosterone. We are evolving into our own self-made armageddon. An interesting story line would be to harvest and freeze sperm and egg from the most peaceful and intellectual of our species, castrate all males on earth, and all boy babies born in the next 9 months, and start over. Without testosterone, now or in the future, could we develop a society that exists only by artificial insemination or surrogate mothers? Would humans be better off without sex and all the problems that go with it? Love would not be obliterated. Humans have many kinds of emotion, affection, and love, that do not involve sexual activity.
Could we develop an intelligent society that would stop creating it's own destruction and instead create solutions, not more problems? This of course won't happen in reality, but it would make an interesting storyline that could turn into dozens of fabricated endings.
But the real true ending is beginning to look like a slow steady self-made armageddon. Some have the evidence, the remainder refuse to accept or believe.

When you think about it, "Go forth and multiply" is the one and only biblical injunction that humankind has enthusiastically embraced

Re: Armageddon (not the movie)
See, it all boils down to SEX.
The Mayan Calendar is just that, a calendar just like the one we use which we start over every year. It is just a way to measure time nothing more.
As for Armageddon as mentioned in the Bible, it is no different then any others who have predicted the end of the world as we know it through out the ages. So far none have gotten in right and the Bible made is so if it ever did happen they could lay claim to knowing it would happen all the time.
Myself, I will not loose any sleep over the topic as it doesn't matter.
If it happens were all dead, NO PROBLEMS.
If it doesn't happen no problem, we all die in due course.
Its like worrying about things you can do nothing about, Christians of course will say that they beat this by their belief system, however there is no proof, only a hope that they are right.
Again back to NO PROBLEMS.

The Mayan just ran out of stone and did not want to start a new one being so far in the future on the one stone already.
But, just in case - link

Our countdown timer has been carefully calculated and verified to be accurate right down to the very last second.
Add our Official December 21 2012 Countdown clock . . .
I certainly would not want to use an inferior timer as might make me miss Armageddon!

Re: Armageddon (not the movie)
In a way, armageddon happens now and then. In 2004 over 250,000 people died in the earthquakes and tsunami's, and now it is happening again in Japan and surrounding area. Call it a micro-armageddon I guess.
The dinosaurs dominated for hundreds of millions of years, and experienced a true armageddon. I don't think the dinosaurs had a bible, proving what? Well, armageddon happens. It can not be predicted, and is not automatically intertwined with religion.

Re: Armageddon (not the movie)
It isn't supernatural it is science. If you live in an Earthquake prone area, it isn't shocking when they happen. Same goes for people who live on ocean front property and get repeatedly hit by hurricanes..just nature + people living in stupid places.

Can a place be stupid?
How about people knowingly living in places of elevated risk,
like tornado "alley"
or in a pine forest
or in the region of the Madrid fault
etc.
Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico seem fairly low risk, although lightning and flooding might be a risk. Even Salt Lake City experienced a damaging tornado.

I think a place can be stupid as a choice of location. It is stupid to build a house where the next Hurricane comes and it will all be blown away. Destroys their lives, causes insurance rates to skyrocket or companies to leave stares that a prone to natural disaster.
Nature will almost always win...so you do better evaluating your risks against your gains of living somewhere. It isn't always a simple case to move whole families and villages to safer ground, they might not want to go.
Or as Sam Kinison so lovingly put it..."This is Sand...nothing grows in sand, MOVE TO WHERE FUCKING FOOD IS!!! [paraphrased]
