So I just spent a half hour trying to cancel my best buy mastercard, it's like pulling teeth. This stupid card only has a 300$ limit, and a 59$ annual fee, so I paid it off, called to cancel, and it's just blah blah blah blah blah blah blah out of those people, I couldn't even get them to cancel it, but they did waive the annual fee, still, with such a low limit, I can't buy anything worthwhile, so I told them that they have 3 months to do something about the limit or I'll be calling to cancel again. Feels like canceling AOL all over again :realpisse

Every business has a government agency that overseas them, give them a call and see how fast that card get canceled. I had this kind of thing happen to me once with a Mortgage company trying to close an escrow, the loan officer handling it went on vacation and he was the only person who could finish the deal, I called the FBI. Yes the FBI is the federal agency that is over mortgage companies, the agent was not happy about having this dumped in his lap, as he asked me why I was calling him, I asked him if it was not the FBI who handled this, he said yes and would make a call. Three hours later everything was done, at the title company, ready for us to sign the final paper work.

Call or email the government agency on credit cards.

Good suggestion, River. I have found that whether you agree politically or not with your Senator, calling their office is a good start to finding out where to go for help. They can get you going where you want to be. They can also go to bat for you if need be. For us common folks, U. S. Senators replace the bribes and friendships you need in other countries to change individual ridiculous things - including bureaucratic decisions.

I'll keep that in mind, but I am a person of my word, so I'll give them 3 months to get the card up to an acceptable level. Just felt like venting because I hate all the high pressure garbage over things like this :/

While this is absurdly unfair, do take note that when you cancel a credit card account, your credit rating is affected in a negative way. As long as there is no annual fee, hang on to it and use it once a year. The longer you are an account holder, and make use of it, and pay it on time, there is a chance that over time you can get the credit limit raised, and avoid stabbing your credit rating in the back.

There is an annual fee of 59$ on the card, they waived it in order to keep me from canceling, and I am aware of taking credit hits, I monitor my credit almost every day seeing how payments etc affect the score. Oddly enough when I paid off my last car, my credit score got raped by 30 points for never missing a payment, I read something about how they come up with that at one point, but the score slowly went back up following it. Still seems unfair to punish someone for doing the right thing, thankfully my bank actually looks at the report and doesn't pay much attention to the score.

I believe the theory is that after you close an account, you have less elbow room for times when you need it. There is a logic to that. Of course, in the last crisis a lot of elbow room got erased when people did nothing different than what they always do.

Go in, dressed and act poorly, make it clear as your income is unstable financing is not an option, cash only. My friend got an upgrade and 1K sun roof with that act - so they could move one off inventory.

Besides doing business with a stack of $100 bills, (Oh how I remember when that stack would be $20 bills), I pay all my monthly utilities and credit card as to create a "savings" account set aside for them to feed on until next time.

Very handy when unforeseen rougher times come.

And savings interest rates are not so great.

Totally agree, Pay cash it confuses them and they give you everything you want. You want to barter for major appliances, you can, then pay cash and get free delivery when others pay for the same service. I bought a select comfort bed several years ago, I asked how soon it could be delivered, the guy said it takes 2 weeks, I paid cash, got it in three days.

Best credit score of all, $100 dollar bills.
