I am quite a foodie, and cook every day. There is good produce out there, but you will not find it at the really discount grocery or the super stores.
The taste of fresh is just so much better , even if it has traveled a bit. Tomatos are a tough one, but buy the on the vine ones and they start to have a tomato flavor , unlike those pale pinky orange things that appear to need a blood transfusion.
I have found some things at the warehouse clubs that are amazing, recently a parmesan type cheese that has been aged in raspberry ale. Its to die for.
They also carry a precut lamb loin, that you can either roast whole or cut the rest of the way for chops. They have an absolutly marvelous flavor , and are always tender.
We are fortunate to have recently gotten a jersey grocery chain here called Shop-Rite. They have good prices, an excellent seafood department , and so far their meats have been way better than any of the other area chains.
The ground beef is so flavorful it brings back memories of the stuff our local butcher ground to order for my Mother.
Good food is out there , just start with quality ingredients, and take the time to cook it yourself. A few extra bucks spent is worth it. We have to eat, so it might as well be good.......

Re: The Taste of Food
Go to France ! or, more simply, buy organic food, reject systematically light products (useless and sometimes unsafe), hormone treated beed (98% of US beef), genetically modified organisms are unsafe and kill useful insects (billions of bees, for example), drink one glass of red wine each day, drink less beer and less soft drinks, which contain a lot of sugar, drink plain water, it is safe and cheaper, don't eat between meals, eat salads, fruits, fish. Use olive oil as often as possible. Ban sugar bars.
You eat what you buy ! switch to fruits, vegetables
Don't take your car whenever you can walk the distance, don't use the elevator if not absolutely necessary.
Watch your weight every day, eat what you need, nothing more.
Remember : the Japanese have the best life expectancy in the world, they eat lots of fish, next come Greeks, Icelandics, French, all populations whose food is natural and safe.

I totally agree with you on that one, seriously, a dear friend of mine died only last month, she was already ill and overweight but I feel almost like I have contributed to her early death (age 51): I checked on her the very day before she died, and she asked me to do some shopping for her, she asked me to pick up some DIET ROOT BEER. As coincidence would have it, A&W diet root beer was on sale at Walgreens that day and I brought her two 2 liter bottles... The very next day, I saw the paramedics going to her home, and I ran down the road to see what was wrong... She was dead, and under her was an empty diet root beer bottle. She had drank TWO LITERS of the stuff since I dropped off her groceries the previous evening.
Every time I drink "diet" colas, I can feel my heart occasionally racing for no reason. I do not know or understand the "cause and effect" relationship, I am not a scientists. For now, all I KNOW is that when I drink artificially sweetened drinks, my heart behaves oddly, and that scares the hell out of me so I don't drink diet sodas anymore. I wish I had compelled my dear friend and neighbor to drink water or some natural tea or something OTHER than the diet root beer I got for her the day before she died, I feel certain that it contributed if not outright caused her death.

Re: The Taste of Food
Carbonated soda does not cause heart attacks and you did not stand over your neighbor and pour the stuff down her throat. You aren't responsible for her death.
My condolences on the loss you feel. You must have been close to feel this way.

Dave is spot on, Deacon.
From other posts I have made here, it is clear that I think there is somekind of a link (which I do not understand and cannot explain) which develops between people or people and animals which transcends distance and even death. I hope you feel that your bond with that person is still intact and that you still have a closeness that is touching.

WATER
The beverage with a meal should be water.
The diet soda, or other beverage costs your body the water that is in it to process it.
You need water to live, digest well and avoid urinary tract stones. Also helps sinus and bronchial system as keeps mucous membranes moist.
Moi's choice, Fluoridated.
Just not "mineral water" as promotes stones.
Sorry Perrier-land

Water, water and more water, pee clear.

While in Paris I loved walking past the markets selling produce and vegetables because I could smell a store away what they were selling. The citrus and other products were like parfums. I loved watching the folks shopping in the small markets and gathering what they wanted for their dinner. Since I am a caregiver for the elderly I would step out of the way for an elderly person pulling their small shopping cart with their purchases. I was greeted with many "Merci monsieur". If I lived in Paris I would want to live to be 200 years old. So much to experience that I do not think one lifetime would be enough. I miss you Paris.
