Thanks to you all for the replies. Some thought provoking stuff. I looked up the various drugs on wikipedia, it made them sound a bit scary but then if you read the side effects I guess you'd never take anything.

That's true, but in the case of testosterone reducing drugs there are plenty of negative side effects that are almost inevitable rather than possible.

Does anyone know if you can get them without a prescription in the UK?

There are on-line sellers (eg. inhousepharmacy) who can ship them in from overseas.

On the bisexuality thing - I'm not depressed about it - in fact I've always enjoyed it. It's just that as I get older other guys get less interested - so if I had so sexual urge it would clear the decks for other hobbies.

It's a nice idea in theory/fantasy, but in reality you'll probably find that as your libido diminishes so will your urge to do your other hobbies.

Funny how you mention the fact that you will lose interest in other hobbies this has happend to me but i never realy put two and two together thought provocing

I can say the same thing. I've never had a single long-time hobby, but my interest in pursuing other activities has definitely taken a back seat to my own self-interest. Spironolactone never did that for me, but Siterone and ethanol injections definitely have. It's rather nice, for the first time in my life.

After castration, be very careful if you find yourself losing interest in hobbies or other things (aside from sex) that you used to find enjoyable. Such a loss of interest can be a one of the symptoms/warning signs of depression, and should be taken very seriously.

I've been practicing simple breathing mediation for a few months now (about 3) and have found that my relationship to my thoughts (sexual and otherwise) has changed at least somewhat.

I'd really like to recommend a starter book call "8 Minute Mediation" by Victor Davich. (Kindle version available for those inclined).

For those leaning towards castration, well, I guess it works to a degree, with individuality being a large component. However, so much of our sexuality is between the ears and not just between the legs that I suspect you may be disappointed with the results of castration.

Good advice. In my particular case, I've lived with depression since adolescence, and it's largely resolved since I've been taking anti-androgens and estrogen.

Interesting, and thanks again to you all - I've been treated for depression several times as well but have never been able to ascribe a particular reason for it - my doctor says some people are just prone to it.

I wondered if with my homosexuality and general sensitivity I deep down wanted to be female. I did the gender identity/gender dysphoria questionnaire for adolescents and adults.

But my score was low, so I would appear to be a bisexual or gay man rather than a female.

So I'm kind of back to square one as castration will not seem to bring the inner peace and relief from anxiety that I am after and will maybe cause more problems than it solves.

Oh, I tried coming out a few years ago but that didn't work either - as actually I am as much straight as gay - or I am sometimes one and sometimes the other.

Meditation is a route but that implies a lot of work on my part and I was looking for the magic bullet.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SEX ADDICTION. It is a myth.

If a person is unhappy with the consequences of their sexual choices, they need to undergo a serious guided evaluation of their emotional needs, the relationship(s) they are in, their attitudes about their own desires which are usually poisonous from the terrible influence of parents and religion, and other issues with a sex-positive therapist. Some people are not monogamous and can never become so. Some folks need to end their marriages and relationship(s), change careers, and leave repressive communities in order to embrace who they are. Other folks find that they use the intense feelings of sexual desire and release to escape from troubling emotions and need to re-learn more effective coping mechanisms. Either way, a sex-positive therapist who has no dog in the hunt of your eventual sexual (or asexual) self-realization can help you work through these issues, learn more about yourself, and make positive choices in your life.

There is a huge industry devoted to the treatment of the non-disease of sex addiction. Many therapists who sell this snake oil are affiliated with strange religious traditions, such as Christianity, which view sex as sinful and urge us to believe in preposterous things like the gender binary, the male as master of the female, the inherent normality and desirability of monogamous heterosexuality, and the survival of the individual human personality after brain death. Others are well-meaning and misguided.

Please do not destroy a part of your body and permanently change your brain chemistry to fix a condition which does not exist.
