Babylon 5

Post by moi621 (imported) »

Babylon 5 was impressive in that like Star Trek it created a Universe we could relate to as we learned so much of their details while others such efforts fail. There are certainly other franchises that have accomplished a following such as Tolkian and Stargate but, lets share what was special about Bab 5.

Several Bab 5 moments I really appreciated.

1) The decision to declare independence from Earth.

2) Delenn telling Sheriden that other races build places for themselves but, Earthers build communities.

3) The USA Today type newspaper, vending machine. One recycled their old paper and bought a new one specifying subjects of interest.

4) Delenn saying, "Abso-fraggin-lutely" then explaining she has been studying some of Earths more colorful expressions.

Any other Bab 5 moments worth recalling.

That was done over several episodes the first season's "And The Sky Full of Stars" was the first that hinted at something very unusual happening.

Then in season three the two-part episode: "War Without End" where they use the time warp to capture Babylon 4 and send it backward in time with Sinclair on board.

My favorite character was Londo Molari who had such a tragic arc from beginning to end.

Jeffrey Sinclair is who your thinking of.

My favorite is the pilot when Lyta Alexander is the telepathy and is talking to G'Kar and G'Kar wants some of Lyta's DNA or sex to get the telepath gene for Narn, She says with a look of go stuff it "I will think about it".

Moving forward next to the last episode, Lyta and G'Kar are getting ready to leave B-5 and she answers that question.

Keeping in mind she left after the pilot show and did not return until the middle of season 3.

The other favorite moments were when Mr Morden asked Vir what he wanted and Vir said "I want to see your severed head on a pike in front of the palace and I can walk by and (then he smiles and waves) at Morden. In the last show Morden is in Vir does just that.

One of my favorite episodes is in the 5th season and it is not necessary for the story arc.

It;s the one about the Brakiri "Day of the Dead" where the dead com e back to visit the living.

Morden has a spectacular line in that episode telling Lennier that he shoiuld seek no wisdom from the dead and this is not long before Lennier betrays Delenn in a very Morden-like fashion.

One of the most spectacular things about the first four seasons is that in the middle of the fourth season, the battle at Coriana 6 is the great and grand confrontation between the Vorlons and the Shadows and the other races.

And the young races win. Sheridan wins, the Shadows and Vorlons leave. Victory.

And then in the rest of seasons four and five we find just how that spectacular win translates into heartbreak and sorrow and victory and success.

B5 is as much about what happens after as it is about what happens before.

While I have to admit loving both Londo and G'Kar, especially the interactions between them, my all time favourite character had to be that ex-Lost in Spacer, Vir Cotto. He had so many of the best moments of the series.

His #2 shining moment had to be him dealing with the Drazi stall-owner who had tried to bug them. That whole scene where he walks into Londo's quarters, grabs a sword off the wall, and heads back out is absolutely priceless.

By far and away though, his best moments of the series occurs first when the Shadow operative asks him what he wants:

I 'd like to live just long enough to be there when they cut off your head and stick it on pike as a warning to the next ten generations that some favors come with too high a price. I want to look up at your lifeless eyes and wave, like this. Can you and your associates arrange that for me, Mr. Morden?

Of course, the crowning moment doesn't come until several seasons later, when Vir does just that. He walks out into the garden, looks up, looks around carefully, smiles... and waves, just like that. Beautiful writing.
