At any age under 15, I'd say adult supervision should be mandatory. However, this is America where you have a right to bear arms and shoot deer.

Re: 14 Year old Indiana boy shot in groin
Hmm
I wouldn't let my oldest son near a gun even now & he's 25. On the other hand his next oldest brother shot a horse when he was 12 with a Colt 45. This was under his mother's supervision. She hates guns and was pleased when Mike did the deed. This is in the UK and we've always had a gun in the house required for animal destruction as my ex is a veterinary surgeon and my middle son soon will be one. A gun is a tool, no more, no less.

I disagree. We should not have any gun controls at all.
Did you know there is a collation between gun control and crime. The more gun control the higher the crime rate is! Why the criminal feels safer when there is strict gun control because they know it's less likely to be shot by a victim!
It's the parents responsibility to teach and enforce gun safety.

You just can not enforce safety by banning potentially dangerous objects. We are not in kindergarten, most are responsible adults.
In Japan registration of large knifes is a fact.

Possible extenuating results of a shotgun wound to the groin:

There are multiple scenarios that could result from this poor boy's wound, we should only think optimistically for him. It's sad to think the worst about him. I still find it hard to believe that they were "putting the gun(s) away" when he was shot in the groin. It just doesn't fit unless the 15 year old was trying to unload it and the 14 yr old stupidly stood in front of it. But it reminds me of this true life story that I'm sad to have been involved with. My son had a friend who died when he and another school friend got into his father's gun cabinet. (My son had been at the house before, but not on that day, fortunately). They were playing around and the one friend accidentally shot the other friend. He died at the scene and was only about 10 years old. Stupid father left a loaded gun in the cabinet or didn't lock up the shells. We never fully knew the whole story. But it devastated everyone and it still stings. Thank God that my son was not there that day. Whew!

Re: 14 Year old Indiana boy shot in groin
I wonder what a good urologist would do when facing a situation like this? I mean, there has to be some tough decisions made. Salvaging as much as you can would seem to be of primary importance, but I'm sure it's extremely difficult, even if warranted to castrate this young boy. Then there's the penis, if riddled with shot pellets, is it resilient enough to heal effectively so that it will function? At close range it would be hamburger and removing it would be a necessity. My cousin is an ER physician and he's seen some real messes. Gunshots to the groin are one of the things he won't deal with, a Urologist is almost always immediately called upon. He won't talk too much about his work, but he's seen a lot of groin gunshot wounds. Most of the time the men leave with less than what they came in with and sexual dysfunction in genital gunshot wounds results in the majority. The trauma is greatest with the penis, it is a delicate and complex organ. Severe injury can mess up erections, orgasm, and feeling.

I wonder how close the boy was to the blast? I hope not too close. That's important and so is the shot size. I figure they were hunting pheasants, rabbits or squirrels. If that's the case the shot size was probably between 5 and 7 1/2. The following website shows what devastation could have occurred.
