Doctor cut out clitoris, court told

While she lay on the operating table, unable to move as the anaesthetic took hold, Carolyn DeWaegeneire's doctor dropped a bombshell, a court has heard.

The 58-year-old said she had consented to a ''simple vulvectomy'' to remove a two-centimetre pre-cancerous lesion she had found on her genitals.

But in the moments before the operation, on August 8, 2002, with three or four other medical staff in the theatre, her gynaecologist allegedly moved close to her and said: ''I'm going to take your clitoris, too.''

Mrs DeWaegeneire made the allegations on the first day of a District Court trial of the former doctor, who stands charged with maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm during the operation, which occurred in a hospital in rural NSW.

The doctor, known only as GSR for legal reasons, is also charged with excising Mrs DeWaegeneire's clitoris, an illegal operation for a doctor to perform unless it is necessary for the patient's health.

Mrs DeWaegeneire yesterday described the outcome of the operation as ''a catastrophe … too enormous for me to cope with''. The doctor's barrister said his client had been ''trying to save her life''.

The District Court judge, Greg Woods, told prospective jurors they could be excused if they could not cope with the graphic nature of the case. Two men and one woman took up the offer before the panel was selected.

Mrs DeWaegeneire's genital region had ''nothing'' left after an area of tissue 9.5 centimetres x 5.5 centimetres x 3.4 centimetres was removed.

The court heard a nurse asked GSR why he was taking so much tissue and was told that if he did not, the cancer would spread. When the nurse said she would not let anyone do that to her, the doctor allegedly said: ''Her husband's dead so it doesn't matter.''

Mrs DeWaegeneire said that after the operation she knew exactly what had happened and was ''shattered''. She did not make any complaints about the surgery until 2004 and did not involve police until April 2008.

''You say he waited until you were helpless and unable to respond [before he] proposed to cut out your clitoris,'' the doctor's barrister, John Stratton, SC, told Mrs DeWaegeneire.

''I take it you told him in no uncertain terms that you were very angry with him?''

But she said there had been ''no point'' complaining.

If this is true, and there's always some doubt involved, but "if" this is true, this doctor is a butcher. The nurses testimony seems to remove any doubt and she should have pulled the scalpel away from this nut. They should allow Carolyn DeWaegeneire to do whatever she wants to him, like removing his penis. I feel sorry for her. It's one thing to "want" this done, it's quite another to have this done without one's permission, while incapacitated.

I'm wondering if this was a long held desire by this doctor. Did he fantasize about doing it or having the opportunity? In this case, he might have thought he could get away with it. By the way, was he a gynecologist? What motivates a man to become a gynecologist? Do they like vagina's? Are they envious? I personally think that any man who becomes a gynecologist has some sort of unfulfilled sexual desire. I would suggest that in some way they are sexually deviant simply because they want to know about, examine, and treat vagina's, vulva's, clitorises, ovaries, etc. I suppose you could say that about a proctologist too, what would motivate them to become a specialist in the anal area? And what motivates a woman to become a urologist who treats men? O.K. Urologists treat women too, but there are some who have become gender selective, treating only men. Bottom line, doctors are human and some, I believe, have hidden agendas for specializing in the areas that they do. That's my .2 cents.

Well if he is guilty of this then i hope the courts will come down on top of him, and no doubt if he is he will be struck off as a doctor, but that will be of little help to this poor woman.

It sounds like he left it to the very last second to tell her what he was going to do,maybe for one reason he thought that with her being put under anaesthetic she would not remember what he was telling her.

At least the nurse was able to come forword,and tell the court that she had said to the doctor,with regards to what he was doing,but it will not restore this womans genitals.

However, assuming what the plantiff AND the witness nurse has said is true, and it seems to be, this doctor certainly has a lousy bedside manner, and is probably a sadist at heart. Then again, given most of the med students I know now, who are over-achieving, self-serving, self-centered and unaltruistic, why are we surprised when we find out our doctors aren't always the Florence Nightingale type?

It's good to see him finally going to trial, many of the witnesses were reluctant and his medical license made it hard to prove wrongdoing in many cases. I believe he was also accused of having a fraudulent license ... fucking monster.

Cancerous lesions of the vulva are usually removed along with as little tissue as possible. Margins that would be totally unacceptable in any other area of the body are considered adequate as it is so easy to destroy a woman's genital sensations by excessive cutting.

A close friend of my wife has had a continuing battle for several years with vulvar cancer. Her latest bout of surgery has left her with basically no inner labia and her clitoris intact. If she needs more surgery, she will have to have a total vulvectomy which will include removing her clitoris and outer labia. This is not a pleasant possibility for her, but the alternative is much worse.

This guy sounds like he gets off on excessive cutting. He needs to be hung by his balls from a high flag pole.
