HONOLULU (AP) —

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupted

anew before dawn Thursday, spewing a steely gray plume of ash about 30,000 feet (9,100 meters) into the sky that began raining down on a nearby town.

The explosion at the summit came shortly after 4 a.m. following two weeks of volcanic activity that sent lava flows into neighborhoods and destroyed at least 26 homes.

Here the weather remains unchanged. High sixties, occasional clouds. Light breeze.

The peach trees remain dormant while small green apricots keep getting bigger.

Last Friday, i texted the landscaper because the lawn needed mowing. He came on Saturday. When he was just about done, it started to rain and stormed hard, really hard. Less than 15 minutes later, the sun's was out and shining.

I swear that every time I think about the lawn - it rains.

I text the lawn has grown high and shaggy and it rains.

I think the weather gods hate me -- or hate my lawn -- or are determined to keep the ground wet and soggy

Weather here, same - same.

Had some good, large Blueberries and small, sweet strawberries. Just a few.

Apricots and Boysenberries should be ripe soon. The Pecan tree looks like it may have a productive year

while the Peach trees and Plum trees remain in dormancy.

CBS News reports River's power station is being approached by lava.

Pele is probably pissed off because it is a Geothermal Power station.

Kilauea, the volcano in Hawaii that began erupting almost three weeks ago, exploded again Monday evening and the lava flow from one of its fissures was threatening a geothermal plant, authorities said.

The latest eruption occurred around 5:51 p.m. local time, according to the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency, citing a report from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

Lava from Fissure 22 breached the property of the Puna Geothermal Venture, where "county, state and federal partners have been collaborating closely to monitor the situation and work with PGV to ensure the safety of the surrounding communities," the county civil defense agency wrote in its post. . . .

The Island of Hawaii is 4,028 sq miles or 10,433 sq Kilometers. It's the largest of the Hawaiian Islands

The "East Rift" section that is erupting involves less than 2 square miles at the far eastern end of the island.

It is however, spectacular at night as seen in this video. and lots of people watch the fire show:

It finally rained, now that most fields here are suffering from early drought stunt and failure to germinate up to 1/3 of the seeds. Fields are full of bare spots. The eye of the storm that hit Florida is now over east-central IL and hovering. I hope it comes back! Looks like it will.

In the meantime, I'm going nuts trying to get rid of chipmunks. Even the old minnow trap with strawberries in it has failed to lure them in, like it used to when I was a kid. I got some auto-locking Black Cat mousetraps, but they are too weak to even kill a mouse. I find them popped every morning, with nothing in them! I'm not talented enough to set conventional rat traps, and I don't need to lose a finger trying. Chipmunks, unlike mice and rats, won't eat ExLax chocolate bars. Add to that, the big black dog keeps chasing them, and digging up the flowers, etc., where the chipmunks run to. He totaled out 2 hostas last night.

Even the local exterminator says he can't get rid of them.

I guess it's time to employ the boys next door with their shotguns, and the house siding be damned!

Reports that there have been over 500 earthquakes at the Kilauea Caldera and the collapse of Pu'u O'o' crater continues. That is significant. This type of activity hasn't been seen since a big eruption in 1924 or 29, I forget.

The East Rift fissures have continued erupting and the most current lava flow is headed to Kapoho Bay destroying everything in its path. (In one picture, I counted over 100 structures surrounding Kapoho Bay. They probably burnt in the lava now).

The eruption 4 years ago was long fingers of lava that were not this destructive.

This current eruption is seriously destructive.
