California squirrels. Figure most Californians moved here.
Brown, with reds and yellows. Similar to the Abyssinian cat I once had.

Could be this guy because I know it ain't the California Ground Squirrel because they don't have bushy tails.
Fox_squirrel
"They have been introduced to both northern and southern California[4] and Oregon.[5] While very versatile in their habitat choices, fox squirrels are most often found in forest patches of 40 hectares or less with an open understory, or in urban neighborhoods with trees."
I have started to pick the fruit a day or three before I would wish to and brown bag it to ripeness.
I leave shelled unsalted peanuts for them in several areas and they eat them.
But not in lieu of messing with my fruit trees.
Next year, a second electric fence.
Is there such a thing as a squirrel dog ?

Could be a common red, but no matter which one it is a sure way to get rid of them is poison, mixed with peanut butter a critter favorite.
River
PS can you use poison in your area? Cats won't touch peanut butter, worthless lazy cats.

Re: There's Always The Weather
Next year I will put up a temporary electric fence.
A more permanent one works well in the Back Yard.
I will not poison or otherwise hurt the little critters.
Thankfully, I do not have to slaughter, clean and prepare my own chicken or meat.
I don't even like killing my vegetables after nursing them along so much.
The Asparagus area is trippy. Ferny parts and Veggie spears I allow to flower.
How will I manage the patch when it is purring along?
Picking fruit isn't the same thing.

Re: There's Always The Weather
Could be a common red, No, the red squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris, is a European species, no longer so common having been endangered and displaced by the American Eastern Grey Squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis; what Moi is seeing is the southern race of the Western Grey Squirrel, Sciurus griseus antonyi.
But dogs, skunks, raccoons, and ring-tailed cats will, and poisoned animals rarely die instantly; instead they slow down and are then captured and eaten by predators like vultures, hawks, eagles, and if you're [un]lucky California condors, which allows the poison to work its way into the food chain. Only a sociopath would contemplate poisoning the food supply of wild animals.Riverwind (imported) wrote: Fri May 30, 2014 12:32 pm Cats won't touch peanut butter, worthless lazy cats.

Re: There's Always The Weather
Well I am glad you think I am a sociopath....
You don't get out much do you? I have noticed you take life very serious, maybe you should study humor as we have all noticed you lack, you don't play well with others do you?
Now for the record since you see everything in black and white, I knew that my friend Moi would never ever harm a creature, ever, which is exactly why I told him to shoot or use poison. I know that this will be lost on you, so much for the hollowed halls. So tell us, have you ever been wrong? Once maybe?
PS I guess nobody told my Cat Rupert that red squirrels were not common, I guess that is not what he keeps bringing me.

Re: There's Always The Weather
The only trouble I've had with electric fences are: 1. kids piss on them. 2. old geezers touch them to see if they are on.
