...it is not the temperature so much as the ability to MAINTAIN the temperature that is important in surgical cauterization. Also, tissue damage must be kept to a minimum.

For the most part any type of device that uses resistance heating has to have the heat that it generates conducted through to the needed area.

In electro-cautery the heat needed is GENERATED by the area. In other words the tissues become the element that heats through resistance heating.

Thus, the temperature is even and is controlled by the voltage and the current generated. Electrocautery units have a continuous temperature. Furthermore, the heating is limited to the area of the arc. Surrounding areas are not damaged. Tissue damage must be kept to a minimum. All you want to do is seal off bleeders, not generate areas with diameters in excess of 3mm with 3rd degree burns. Smaller areas are less prone to infection, especially since their blood supply is so rich. (they are blood vessels)

Devices like soldering guns are bad because they lack the thermal loading capacity to maintain their temperature during operation and they make too much tissue damage.

You are right. He might have very well saved Don's life by insisting that he go to the hospital. This is the danger in clandestine castrations. Don is lucky that this "cutter" was conscientious. Most are not and they have the mentality of the old pre-Roe v. Wade backroom abortionists. Don is lucky.

When you said $MONEY$ you hit the nail right on the head.

If somebody has enough money they can get anything that they want. Elvis Presley had a doctor that he had on staff to write prescriptions for whatever drug he felt that he needed.

A doctor can do ANY procedure in most states LEGALLY in his office. It does not matter what, either.

But, if he does it in a hospital he MUST be on staff there and have privledges.... AND any procedure and its outcomes are subject to peer review. Think about this and you'll begin to see the light.

If more men wanted castrated there would probably be somebody who would do it. Spector is semi-retired because I can assure you that he would probably not be able to maintain his office from $2000.00 castration fees. He'd starve to death.

This is why your Dr. Kimmel will not do castrations exclusively. And malpractice fear is very intimidating also. In a court of law he would get trashed by a lawsuit regardless if the "castree" had signed 100 consents.

Follow the money, Andrew.

And for the record I'll say I'm eternally grateful to Luvpain for being the one who actually called 911 :
