At what age do boys first start masturbating

I am writing a story and I need to know at what age do boys first start masturbating in the US. I know that puberty has been starting earlier and earlier. This is probably partially because boys get so much more to eat than they did in the past.

I started masturbating when I was 12 in the middle sixties. What is the average age now? At what age would 90 percent of boys be prepubescent now?

I don't have any scientific studies to point to, though I am sure somewhere this very question has been studied, I only have my own experience.

The first time I masturbated and reached a climax was when I was 12, that was in 1975. I was a horribly repressed and underdeveloped freak sexually and emotionally, so the norm may very well have been a younger age.

here is what happened to me. I had this football game board toy, that had a vibrator device underneath its base. It was only held on with cheep rivets and one day it came off. It was metal and about 2 inches square. I plugged it in and turned it on. It felt good in my hands, vibrating. I don't know what prompted me, but I took off my pants and pulled down my underware and held it against my penis. Now I was only 8 years old here and did not know anything about jacking off. I then decided to lay on my bed, laying on my stomach with the vibrator device agains my penis. I turned the thing on and I don't remember how long it took, but the device quickly induced my 1st orgasum. Of course, it was dry. I can clearly remember the spasums my penis went in too and how good it felt. I continued to do this just about every day for a while. Again, I cummed dry, but the spasums i was having were definetely a ejaculation.

I think the age-range is far bigger than one would think.

I know of people who never took boner-in-hand for a real masturbation session until age 14-15.

Me, I was playing with it, feeling pleasure, at age 8 like the poster above; before I was 10 years old, I was humping the new carpet in the basement; soon after I learned how to masturbate 'properly'.

And of course, there are going to be even earlier and later starters, although the earlier ones are more just 'playin' with it' and the older ones, at the very least, were humping their matresses in their sleep and having nocturnal emissions.

But it's at least probably safe to say the more common age range for first real masturbation is about between 8 and 13, give or take.

I'm older than curious_guy, so I can't say much about today's kids, except that I expect they know much more about sex than I did; I didn't know shit, until I moved to Kansas from Texas the summer before I was fourteen. The Kansas kids knew more than any of us East Texas kids did.

I started puberty the summer before I was twelve, which occurred in November. One kid, whom I happened to meet in the park that summer, but whom I didn't know, beat around the bush about masturbation, and in the bathroom, once I got home, I flopped my dick around, but didn't know to stroke it. It got hard; but I didn't get off; and that was the last time I tried, until I moved to Kansas.

I never heard another kid in East Texas even hint about masturbation. I didn't know it was possible to ejaculate or climax.

During the school year, when I was twelve, I moved to Dallas. A boy my age lived next door. He spent the night at my apartment one night; we took a bath together. As we were getting undressed in the bathroom, he asked me if I had hair and if my dick got hard all the time. I said yes to both. He said his did, too, but looking back on it, I'm sure he knew no more about the reason for it than I did. I'm convinced he'd never masturbated either.

Even in Jr. High, at age 13 - in Texas - I never heard anyone talk about sex or masturbation. My dick was hard all the time, but I didn't know what to do with it.

During the summer, when I was 13, I moved to Kansas. I went backyard camping with some neighborhood boys, all a couple of years younger than I. They told dirty jokes all night. A couple of girls - about my age - the girl next door and her friend, asked me about my balls. Although I knew which balls they meant, I pretended I didn't.

But, even with this added information, which included talk about masturbation, I still didn't know how to do it, and made it past my 14th birthday, a masturbatory virgin.

In the meantime, I had a couple of wet dreams.

One day, in gym class, one of the boys was sitting astride one of the bars or a set of parallel bars. He started stroking the bar with both hands, from his crotch out. The proverbial light went off in my head: "that's how you do it!"

I went straight to the bathroom when I got home, lay down on the bathroom floor and jacked off for the first time. It was a long time after that before I missed a day doing it. I even jacked off once in the back seat of the car on a trip with my parents, with my mom and dad in the front seat.

There was an eight year-old kid in the neighborhood - different neighborhood from the first; I moved - who hung out with me a lot. He could get hard, but he couldn't orgasm. I learned a hell of a lot about sex from him. The other boys in that neighborhood, most not into puberty, had apparently tried jacking off. Bobby, the eight year-old, told me about a circle jerk among several off them; but none of them could shoot. Another kid, probably about 11 could. Bobby told me that kid could shoot from one end of the bathtub to the other.

During the summer, when I was still fourteen and had been jacking off for some months, I went back to the first neighborhood to visit the boy that lived across the street from where I had. He was twelve at the time. He started talking about jacking off. He introduced me to his mother's vibrator and applied it to my dick. I came while he watched; we were on his parent's bed.

Bobby told me about kids younger than I that were fucking. I lived across the street from an elementary school, the one he went to. He pointed out to me a girl they were fucking; but she was pretty ugly. I really wasn't hot to try it out with her.

When I was 13 (1961) there was one boy in my class who was able to masturbate with an ejaculation as a result. At school summer camp he was willing to show us, his peers who were surprised and curious, how he did it if some one could give him a handkerchief or a towel to catch his sperm and clean his penis. Noboby was willing to sacrifece his handkerchief or towel. The guy must been 12-13 yo, certainly not older. He was an exception.

Freud says...

Freud noted that, at different times in our lives, different parts of our skin give us greatest pleasure. Later theorists would call these areas erogenous zones. It appeared to Freud that the infant found its greatest pleasure in sucking, especially at the breast. In fact, babies have a penchant for bringing nearly everything in their environment into contact with their mouths. A bit later in life, the child focuses on the anal pleasures of holding it in and letting go. By three or four, the child may have discovered the pleasure of touching or rubbing against his or her genitalia. Only later, in our sexual maturity, do we find our greatest pleasure in sexual intercourse. In these observations, Freud had the makings of a psychosexual stage theory.

The oral stage lasts from birth to about 18 months. The focus of pleasure is, of course, the mouth. Sucking and biting are favorite activities.

The anal stage lasts from about 18 months to three or four years old. The focus of pleasure is the anus. Holding it in and letting it go are greatly enjoyed.

The phallic stage lasts from three or four to five, six, or seven years old. The focus of pleasure is the genitalia. Masturbation is common.

The latent stage lasts from five, six, or seven to puberty, that is, somewhere around 12 years old. During this stage, Freud believed that the sexual impulse was suppressed in the service of learning. I must note that, while most children seem to be fairly calm, sexually, during their grammar school years, perhaps up to a quarter of them are quite busy masturbating and playing "doctor." In Freud's repressive era, these children were, at least, quieter than their modern counterparts.

The genital stage begins at puberty, and represents the resurgence of the sex drive in adolescence, and the more specific focusing of pleasure in sexual intercourse. Freud felt that masturbation, oral sex, homosexuality, and many other things we find acceptable in adulthood today, were immature.

This is a true stage theory, meaning that Freudians believe that we all go through these stages, in this order, and pretty close to these ages.

I was deliberately masturbating before the age of 6. I would rub it on anything that would hold still. I did it to produce orgasms (dry ones). I believe he first time I ejaculated I was 10 or at the oldest 11. There were other kids masturbating by that age and some of them talked openly about it. There was one kid at school with me that often asked me if I had ejaculated yet (I don't remember the word he used for ejaculate).
