Is it a curse or a blessing to have to/get to read stories before they become available to everyone else?
On the one hand, you have a voice in what gets published, and you get to enjoy them before anyone else does, the way fashion editors or designers get to see things before they come on the market.
On the other hand, you're probably forced to read stuff that doesn't interest you, or maybe even disgusts you, and you still have to read it, so . . .
Just curious,

Re: Query to Paolo - archive submission master:
Many times, I've tried to push this job off onto someone else.
Plix lasted longer than anyone else, and even he gave it up.
Slammr has been gracious enough to assist me when he has time, but he doesn't want it either.
Keep in mind, I've been at this since like 1999 or 2000. Over time, it all starts to look and sound the same. Very rarely does a story even get my attention when I read it. At least every other day, I read something that was improperly tagged that disgusts me. At least once a week, I end up - literally - vomiting because of some over-the-top piece of garbage that only has 'castration' or 'eunuchism' as a sidelight.
Right now, about eight of ten submissions go into the trash.
The last story - last week, I believe - titled "Gisei - Sacrifice" went into the trash because it glorified violence for the sake of violence. about 1/4 of the way in, I was done with it.
Now I see it's in the tank - AGAIN.
Does that answer your question?

LOL. Well, I"m glad you had an opportunity to vent. I was asking the question in sincerity. I was curious about the reality of being the submissions editor, and I always like pose questions that come to mind of the people who can best answer them.
I personally wouldn't want to read a bunch of stuff that didn't interest me. That's why I quit college. I was tired of being told what to read. I'd had enough. EuA is a broad church, and I find very little in it that actually captures my attention, so I'm naturally intrigued about your position, where you're sort of forced to do so.
As for my most recent story, Gisei, as I said in my email to you, I simply wanted to know why it was rejected. Now that I know, I can accept the reality of it. And if I stepped on anyone's toes, than all I can offer is my apologies, and respectfully withdraw my foot.
However, monsieur, if you wish to joust with me, in anger, let me remind you that I bear no ill will, and I submit my work for the sake of others enjoyment. If you wish to make pointed remarks, I fear it reflects poorly on you, not me.
Anywho, cheerio until my next story. I'll be more mindful of what I submit.

Nicholas - Never, even joust with a Dark Lord, you'll lose. I didn't see any pointed remarks, all I saw was general advice for everyone.
Paolo is fair and has always been that way. I'd even trust him with "your life"
