FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 16, 2010
The Board of Directors of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), in the interest of the health and well-being of transgender and transsexual people world-wide, issued today, 16 June 2010, the following identity recognition statement:
No person should have to undergo surgery or accept sterilization as a condition of identity recognition. If a sex marker is required on an identity document, that marker could recognize the persons lived gender, regardless of reproductive capacity. The WPATH Board of Directors urges governments and other authoritative bodies to move to eliminate requirements for identity recognition that require surgical procedures.
This statement has been posted on the WPATH website at www.wpath.org

Now if only the troglodyte legislators in some red states were actually susceptible to reason.

Re: Recognizing Gender Identity
I am glad WPATH came out with such a strong statement. It is long overdue. Too many trans folk suffer harassment, or worse, because of mismatches between presentation and official IDs.

Re: Recognizing Gender Identity
Somehow lately I've been wanting to go to India for a new identification. "Other" sounds fine to me. I wish I could speak Hindi or Gujarat or something in order to get around there better. When I die you can just put me in a pink colored coffin and put up a fire. Or maybe the urn should be pink. I don't know.
