Re: What is it about, Cats ?
It is amazing how cats understand, "No".
They may complain about it or sneak back and get their "denied", later but
they all seem to "get it" when you say "No" to them.
Extreme flea season. Getting through the Frontline Plus.
Using some Sentry Spray too. It works but, it is ghastly stuff.
Capstar tablets work great but, don't last long at all.
The Siamese sleep on my bed. Whether I am in it or not. Definitely when I am.
The micro flea shit on the sheets disgusts even me.
And you can't tell them "No" "you can't sleep on my bed" and make it stick.

Cats are like small kids, in that they always probe the "I can't", "it is denied" and other similar statements, to test if they still stand.
Or, you can think that a cat is a small, and relatively tamed piece of nature's chaos, made to train you before meeting the real chaos.
So, that a man who thinks that he controls everything, and the life can be made fully ordered and without chaos in it... well, so that that person wouldn't be shocked when he understands that chaos can't be controlled, only slightly influenced in needed direction

Re: What is it about, Cats ?
Cats and NO.
I live in a duplex, the back door goes to a small porch that leads down to a basement and a common door to outside. When I put the dog out the cat likes to go to that porch and down 3 or 4 steps and sit, I tell him 'get in the house' he sits, I threaten him with life and he sits, my son goes out, takes one look a Rupert and says, 'IN THE HOUSE' and Rupert runs in the house like his life depends on it.
I think I know why he does this, my son never gives him treats so when he talks to Rupert, Rupert hears what he is saying and knows he means it, me I am the treat guy and if he sits on the step I will bribe him which is what he is waiting for.
Turning your back on them also works, but dont stand near because they will headbutt you, cats hate being ignored, its OK that they ignore you but not the other way around.

What do you suppose the "head butt" means in cat ?
When they bump that part of their head between the ears into a person.
I don't think they do it to other cats or critters.
And the marking scent glands are in the cheek rubs.
So it isn't to declare turf.

Re: What is it about, Cats ?
Its a sign of close affection. My younger cat bumps me in the arm when on the bed or here on the computer desk. She also does it to the older cat whom she also walks up to and then rolls into her side. Upon which the older cat immediately starts bathing her (they're not related by biology). The older has been the mother to her ever since I got her, although at the time she was the middle child. The original eldest hated both of them severely.

They have 'glands' in their heads. They are 'marking' you. It is an act of affection.

Re: What is it about, Cats ?
The cheek rubbing that seems so very cute is "marking" theirs.
I've heard the top of the head butting was affection. Of my 3 cats, Solly
does it the most.
"I want it, I want it now", happens every morning
Solly watches for that first sign of my waking up and makes rolling over and going back to sleep more difficult.
Some mornings I lay there, still, hoping for a few extra minutes before he notices, stands next to my shoulders and bellows the loudest "meows" you can imagine. This is Solly's "love time" and he wants it. Then a breakfast better follow promptly or more bellowing "meows" will be heard.
His little brother Izzy is capable of a harsher, louder "meow" and does so on random occasions.
Usually I cannot figure out what he wants, attention, food, treatsie, etc. so I term those occasions,
"being Izzied".
OFBK :kittygray is a sweetie. She does not head butt or cheek rub. She gets in your line of view and emits the sweetest "mew" and trills to get attention and her goal.
Lately she sometimes chooses to nap on a chair next to me and I give her a light pet now and then she purrs over then naps s'more. Before she was pretty much to herself.
All three have there own ways yet get themselves understood, mostly.
All three are over 15 years old. Old cats are much more fun, really. They "relate".
All three get their own, individual, "love time" - every day.
